The Shorter Wedding

I graduated from Westminster Theological Seminary in 1989. I hold a Master's Degree in Religion from a well-respected Christian Seminary and once a long time ago, I considered full-time ministerial work. But those dreams dissipated and I am well satisfied with my job as a schoolteacher.

Still, I spent two years of my life with people who would become missionaries, youth workers, and church planters and there remains a side of me that has illusions of grandeur. I admit to sitting in church critiquing a sermon, thinking of better illustrations or catchier acronyms for the three points that will surely come up.

John and Barbara

But that's not for me. I couldn't do that. Not on a week to week basis. I'm not even sure I want to guest speak before a congregation. No, my dream has always been to officiate a wedding ceremony. Ever since entering seminary school, I thought that it would just be a lot of fun to marry off my friends. Unfortunately, I never did get ordained as a minister and my friends never really did seriously consider allowing me to marry them off. ("A prophet knows no honor in his own home town" - Jesus; alternatively, can you seriously say, "I do" with a really close friend asking the question?!)

I was invited to perform the wedding ceremony of my friends Nathan and Jen about a year ago and one of my lifelong goals was close to being realized. I researched ordination boards and found one in Texas that was willing to ordain me as a minister. Little did I know that I would be called into service before Nathan and Jen's wedding.

John is the high school theater director and he became engaged to Barbara during the school year. I've gotten to know them both over the last couple of years and they're good people. Before one of the high school productions, John learned that I was going to officiate Nathan and Jen's wedding and asked me to consider doing their's. I asked him to talk to the Professor (Barbara) first. He did and she agreed. I got my first gig.
