| What Are Furries? | |||||||||||||||||||
| ...or, "No, they're not all perverts" | |||||||||||||||||||
| Why is this page here? | |||||||||||||||||||
| This page is here because, although many people don't know what furries are, the people who think they do know what furries are often have the wrong idea. Unfortunately, due to the media and lack of proper information, furries are usually seen as perverted geeks who dress up as animals. Although this is true of some furries, most furries are NOT like that. Most furries are just normal people who like animals. | |||||||||||||||||||
| What is a furry? | |||||||||||||||||||
| There are two main definitions for the word "furry". One is that a furry is an anthropomorphic animal, that being an animal with human attributes (such as speech, standing upright, etc.) which is commonly seen in cartoons. The second major definition of the word "furry" is applied to people and means a person who expresses in some way a desire to be an animal, or feels a strong connection to animals, usually a single species. Often this is expressed by the person playing an animal character in a game, writing stories about their animal character, drawing pictures of their animal character, or, in some cases, dressing up as their animal character. Whether a person does one or all of these things it is enough to classify that person as a "furry". To some furries, or "furs", being a furry just means that they have an animal character that they write stories about or play in a game. To other furs, being a furry means that they feel a spiritual connection to a certain species, that being their "totem animal". In either case, these people are considered members of the same group, the "furry fandom". Furries have conventions, online chat groups, and many other ways of gathering together to talk about their common interests. Furries can range from a person who plays a lion character in a game to a person who truly believes that they are a lion trapped in a human body. Though some furs take this to a sexual level, that is not the basis of the community. It can be argued that furries have existed for hundreds of years. The tribes of North America and Africa which believed in totem animals and animal gods could be considered furries. Likewise, the early Europeans who wore animal furs to become more like an animal could be considered furries. So, the connection with animals that classifies a person as a furry goes back far through human history. |
