“The
Gambler” by Kenny Rogers
On a warm summer's
evenin', on a train bound for nowhere
I met up with the gambler. We were both too tired to
sleep.
So we took turns a-starin' out the window at the
darkness.
When boredom overtook us, he began to speak.
He said, "Son, I've
made a life out of readin' people's faces.
Knowin' what the cards were by the way they held their
eyes.
So if you don't mind my sayin', I can see you're out of
aces,
For a taste of your whiskey, I'll give you some
advice."
So I handed him my bottle,
and he drank down my last swallow.
Then he bummed a cigarette and asked me for a light.
And the night got deathly quiet, and his faced lost all
expression.
He said, "If you're gonna play the game, boy, you
gotta learn to play it right.
You've got to know when to
hold 'em, know when to fold 'em
Know when to walk away, know when to run.
You never count your money when you're sittin' at the
table.
There'll be time enough for countin' when the dealin's
done.
Every gambler knows that the secret to survivin'
Is knowin' what to throw away and knowin' what to keep.
'Cause every hand's a winner and every hand's a loser
And the best that you can hope for is to die in your
sleep."
And when he finished
speakin', he turned back toward the window,
Crushed out his cigarette and faded off to sleep.
And somewhere in the darkness, the gambler he broke even.
And in his final words I found an ace that I could keep.
You've got to know when to
hold 'em, know when to fold 'em
Know when to walk away, know when to run.
You never count your money when you're sittin' at the
table.
There'll be time enough for countin' when the dealin's
done.

“He
Ain’t Worth Missing” by Toby Keith from his
self-titled cd
He’s flyin’ high
tonight
He’s got a brand new lover
Here you come a runnin’
you’re lookin’ for some cover
I know you’re sad and lonely
I know you’re feelin’ blue
You miss him so much
won’t let me get too close to you
Oh, he ain’t worth
missin’
Oh, we should be kissin’
Stop all this foolish wishin’
(Oh) he ain’t worth missin’
I know your head is turnin’
I know your heart is burnin’
Girl, you’ve got to listen
don’t you know he ain’t worth missin’
You know I’m here to
save you
but you ain’t through cryin’ yet
Look at your pretty face
all red and soakin’ wet
I’m gonna try to make him
just a memory
Come on baby, let’s get started
The first thing you’ve got to see
(repeat chorus)
If you need someone to
hold you
someone to ease your pain
Well I’ll be holdin’ steady
girl, when you get ready
I’m gonna show you love is a good thing
Yeah, love is a good thing
(repeat chorus twice and
fade)

“You
Don’t mess around with Jim” by Jim Croce
Uptown got it’s
hustlers, the Bow’ry get its bums
Forty second street got big Jim Walker
He’s a pool shootin’ son of a gun
Yeah, he big and dumb as a man can come
but he stronger than a country hoss
An when the bad folks all get together at night
you know they all call Big Jim “Boss”
just because, and they say
(chorus)
You don’t tug on superman’s cape
You don’t spit into the wind
You don’t pull the mask off the old lone ranger
And you don’t mess around with jim
Well out a south Alabama
come a country boy
he said, “I’m lookin’ for a man named Jim
I am a pool shootin’’ boy my name is Willie
Mccoy
but down home they call me “Slim”
Yeah, I’m looking for the king of Forty second
street
He drivin’’ a drop-top cadillac
last week he took all my money
and it may sound funny
but I come to get my money back”
and everybody say, “Jack, don’t you know that
(repeat chorus)
Well a hush fell over the
pool room
Jimmy come boppin in off the street
and when the cuttin’ were done the
only part that wasn’t bloody
was the soles of the big man’s feet
Yeah, he were cut in ‘bout a hundred places
and he were shot in a couple more,
and you better believe they sung a diff’rent kind a
story
when a Big Jim hit the floor.
oh, now they say
(2nd chorus)
You don’t tug on superman’s cape
You don’t spit into the wind
You don’t pull the mask off the old lone ranger
And you don’t mess around with Slim
(repeat 2nd chorus)
Yeah, big Jim got his hat,
find out
where it’s at
and not hustling people strange
to you
Even if you do got a two-piece custom-made pool cue

“I’m
Not Strong Enough to Say No” by BlackHawk from the
CD BLackHawk 2
The sign says” do not
touch”--you’re out of bounds
You’re forbidden fruit, don’t come around
It says don’t make plans ‘cause on your hand
is a promise made to another man
Cause when you’re
around my defenses go down
Feelings get stronger, looks get longer
The closer you come, the weaker I get
If it ain’t happened now, just ain’t happened
yet
(chorus)
So please, please, please go
I’m not strong enough to say no
Please, please don’t stay
I’m not man enough to walk away
Please, please pass by
I can’t resist you even though I try
So please go, I’m not strong enough to say no
The sing says, ”slow
down-slippery ice”
You’ve got dangerous curves, don’t think twice
It says, “not for sale,” you’re spoken for
Just take your heart and walk out the door
Cause when you’re
around my defenses go down
Feelings get stronger, looks get longer
The closer you come, the weaker I get
If it ain’t happened now, just ain’t happened
yet
(chorus)
Don’t say I
didn’t warn you, don’t say you didn’t know
Don’t wait til it’s too late and then try to go
The closer you come, the weaker I get
If it ain’t happened now, just ain’t happened
yet
I’m beggin’ you

“Neon
Moon” by Brooks & Dunn from the cd Brand New Man
When the sum goes
down
on my side of town
That lonesome feeling
comes to my door
The whole world turns blue
There’s a
rundown bar
cross the railroad tracks
I’ve got a table for two
way in the back
Where I sit alone
and think of losing you
I spend most every
night
beneath the light
of this neon moon
If you lose your one
and only
there’s always room here for the lonely
To watch your broken dreams
dance in and out of the beams
of a neon moon
I think of two young
lovers
running wild and free
I close my eyes
and sometimes see
you in the shadows
of this smoke-filled room
No telling how many
tears
I’ve sat here and cried
or how many lies
that I’ve lied
Telling my poor heart
she’ll come back someday
Oh but I’ll be alright,
as long as there’s light
from a neon moon
The jukebox plays on
drink by drink
The words of every sad song
seem to say what I think
This hurt inside of me
ain’t never gonna end
Oh but I’ll be
alright
as long as there’s light
from a neon moon
(chorus)

“Junior’s
in Love” by Joe Diffie from the cd Third Rock from
the Sun
With a dozen roses in his
gun rack
Junior pulled up into her side lot
He carried them up to the front porch
and hollered, “Wanda, look at what I got!”
She was sittin’
there watchin’ tv
with a dry wall hanger named Shorty
She pressed her nose to the screen door
and said, “They smell like wd-40!”
He said, “Now
don’t you be that way
you know how much I love you
I can’t hardly sleep at night
and when I do I dream of you
and by the way, Shorty, I thank you
you could have had ‘em put me in jail, son
I’m just glad I run out of air hose
when I come at you with that nail gun
(chorus)
Oh, Junior’s in love, ain’t that a good one?
He’ll track her down and then if she should run
He’ll bring her home like a deer on the hood, son
Junior’s in love
Wanda walked down the
front steps
and said, “I hate to break up the party
but I’ve got to get to work by five
Would you run me over there, Shorty?”
That’s when Junior turned bright red
and said, “I’m takin’ her to the
diner”
And he threw Shorty in the truck bed
with a busted lip and a shiner
Oh, Junior’s in
love, ain’t that a hot one?
There’s lots of lover and Junior, he’s not one
Don’t know a kiss from a hug from a shotgun
Junior’s in love
Oh, you know there’s
an oil puddle by the diner
and it came out of his transmission
That’s where he parks every night
and stares through the window
in a lovesick, sorry condition...You see
(repeat first chorus)

“So
Help Me Girl” by Joe Diffie from the cd Third Rock
from the Sun
You could have kissed me
like this wasn’t gonna last
Kept me from saying something I’ll never take back
You could have held me like there was no chance of me
waking up where I am
You could’ve stopped short of every dream I ever had
(chorus)
So help me girl you’ve gone too far
It’s way too late to save my heart
The way it feels each time we touch
I know I’ve never been so loved
An’ I can’t help myself, so help me girl
You had to be there when
that ol’ sun came up
making last night feel like a vision of things yet to
come
You just had to hold me like nobody else
Now look what you’ve gone and done
You had to love me ‘til i just can’t get enough
(repeat chorus)

“Forever
and a Day” by Gary Allan from the cd Used Heart for
Sale
They say nothin’ last
forever
Honey, I’ve got good news
Whoever said that
never got the blues from you
This cloud I’m under
looks like it’s gonna stay
The thunders gonna roll
forever and a day
Nothing’s gonna
change
the way I think and feel
My heart is so heavy
and my fate is sealed
Lord, stop this misery
every night I pray
I’m knowin’ that it’s there
forever and a day
Forever and a day
You’re stuck here in my mind
Forever and a day
is such a long, long time
I tell myself again
that I just can’t swim
This river of regret
that I’m drownin’ in
You’ve left me with
this feeling
that I just can’t shake
My spirit’s gonna sink
forever and a day

“In
This Life” by Collin Raye from the cd In This Life
For all I'd been blessed
with in my life,
there was an emptiness in me,
I was imprisoned by the power of gold,
With one honest touch you set me free,
(chorus)
Let the world stop turning,
let the sun stop burning,
Let them tell me love's not worth going through,
If it all falls apart I will know deep in my heart,
the only dream that mattered had come true
In this life, I was loved by you
for every mountain I have
climbed,
every raging river crossed,
You were the treasure that I longed to find,
Without your love I would be lost
(repeat chorus)
In this life I was loved by you

“I
Can Love You Like That” by John Michael Montgomery
from his self-titled cd
They read you Cinderella
You hoped it would come true
That one day your Prince Charming
would come rescue you
You like romantic movies
You never will forget
they way you felt when Romeo kissed Juliet
All this time that
you’ve been waiting
you don’t have to wait no more
(chorus)
I can love you like that
I would make you my world
Move heaven and earth if you were my girl
I will give you my heart
Be all that you need
Show you you’re everything that’s precious to
me
If you give me a chance
I can love you like that
I never make a promise I
don’t intend to keep
So when I say forever, forever’s what I mean
I’m no casanova, but I swear this much is true
I’ll be holdin’ nothing back when it comes to
you
You dream of love that’s everlasting
well baby open up your eyes
(repeat chorus)
(bridge)
You want tenderness--I got tenderness
and I see through to the heart of you
If you want a man who understands
You don’t have to look very far
top
“Friends”
by John Michael Montgomery from the cd What I Do the Best
You say you want to be
friends
That’s a newly sharpened blade
That’s a dagger to the heart
of the promises we made
That’s a chapter full of pain
a season full of rain
a dark and stormy night
spent all alone
(chorus)
Friends
get scattered by the wind
tossed upon the waves
lost for years on end
Friends
slowly drift apart
they give away their hearts
maybe call you now and then
But you wanna be
just friends
You say you love me very
much
and you’ll always hold me dear
Those are the sweetest words
I never want to hear
What’s a love without desire
a flame without fire
can’t warm me late at night
when I need you most
(chorus)
Friends
slowly drift apart
they give away their hearts
maybe call you
now and then
Darling can’t you
see
this is killing me
we could never be
just friends
