After John's last fight, on may 29, 2001, he announced his retirement. His last fight was a successful victory over Matt Corbetta. The fight was stopped in the third round due to dirty tactics by the challenger, Matt Corbetta. Matt was disqualified, and John was the winner. He retained his three world belts, but went on after the fight to announce his retirement. The following statement was released by Ferraro following the bout: "It has come with great pleasure and joy to announce to the world that I am stepping away from the sport of boxing. I feel that I have nothing left to prove in the sport, and am very pleased with my last performance. It is really great to go out with a record of 42-0. I will spend my free time with my family, and friends. I would like to thank all of my fans who have supported me throughout my career. Without you guys, my greatness would not have been possible. Also, I would like to thank my promoter, and trainer, Ken Romanello. I am going out by saying that there is a 99.9% chance of me not returning to the ring, but I will never say never, and I always like to leave a window of opportunity open for the future. Thank you, and God Bless!" Although he is retired, his greatness still lives on. The next fight for John's three world title will be between Joel "Chicken" Jenson, and Matt "Track Star" Corbetta. Joel is a 2 to 1 favorite. THe fight will take place in the near future. Please check back as we will keep you posted. -K.R. |
