Photography is an art of seeing the world through the lens. For this reason, a photographer is sometime called a lensman. Anyone can be a good photographer. All it takes is a pair of creative eyes working together with a creative mind. After that is practice to improve your skill. A good camera with quality lens makes your photos turn out better. Remember, the important thing is a creative and skillful photographer. You can give him a $1000 camera, he can produce an award winning photo. On the other hand, give a $7000 camera to someone who has no creativity in capturing pictures, all you get are average everyday photographs.

I started photography since I was about 21. I inherited a Konica SLR from my mother. Some jerk conned her into buying the SLR when all she needed was a point and shoot compact camera. Having to manually focus, setting the shuttle speed and aperture on the SLR was just too complicated for her to handle. I started playing with that camera and interest in photography was aroused, but I wasn't going anywhere. Situation changed after I was posted to 3DSMB where I completed the rest of my national service. I got to know several platoon mates who were serious hobbists. I learned something from them. I felt I needed a better camera.

How in the world I started Photography?
My first serious camera
In 1990, I attended a photo exhibition. For the first time, I got to see so many brands of cameras and got the opportunity to handle them and see how they operated. The new trend then was the auto-focus SLR camera. Needless to say, I collected a lot of literatures about cameras. I read all the technical specifications and compared the prices. I then shortlisted Canon EOS series, Minolta Dynax series and the Nikon AF series. After much delibration, I finally bought my very first serious SLR camera (to me that was serious),the Canon EOS 630. Along with it are the 35mm to 70mm zoom lens and a 70mm to 210mm zoom lens. They cost me about $1400. I didn't even get a flash unit. I had to use my old auto flash which had a guide number 30. So, no AF flash to work with the AF (auto forcus) camera. Of course, I did get an AF flash later. I chose Canon because it offered the best value for money. It was fully packed with features for hobbists to exploit their creativity without sacrificing performance. Nikon may provide the best performance, but for the same amount of money, most of the features were not available. Some may argue that those extra features may not be used at all. If you are serious in exploring your creativity, they will want to have them. I have used all the features at one time or another.
Having possess a camera and don't possess a skill does not make much sense! I started to learn more about photography by reading books and Photography magazines. It was helpful to attend photography classes and workshops. I joined the SAFRA Photo club at Bukit Merah. My first class was a Black and White class conducted by Mr. Yip Hoi Kee, whom I admire a lot. He has produced many great disciples, but I'm not one of the greats. Certainly, I have learned a great deal from him and other experienced members in the club. Club organised a lot of workshops, studio sessions, and photo outing which provide a lot of shooting opportunity. Due to commitment and time constrain, I haven't been participating much.
