THREE DAY WEEKEND!!
On Memorial Day 2004, I drove to my un-air conditioned office in Oak Brook, Illinois and worked for eleven hours.  Within the month I had decided to that it was time to make a change.  Now, one year later, I'm back in North Carolina and working for the state.  It wasn't always clear that it was the right thing to do -- particularly during the six months of unemployment -- but reflecting on it this Memorial Day from the porch of my Dad's cabin as I was watching the goats climb the rock wall of the barn, it felt pretty good.
But it wasn't all reflection.  The weekend started on Friday night in Bynam, NC.  I've been hearing about this for years.  Every Friday night in the summer there is live music outside the old general store.  Luckily, Owen (a Colorodo boy who knows more small towns in NC than most octagenarian tarheels) knew all about it and was willing to drive.  The music (funky-rock-blues-psychedelic-boogie) was decent, but the town was beautiful, the crowd was interesting, and the weather couldn't have been better.  AND, we didn't feel bad about skipping out early for a fantastic Turkish meal in Chapel Hill, and then on to continued revelry in Raleigh.
On Saturday morning, I drove down to Asheville to take advantage of an empty house in the city and an ever-waiting cabin in Barnardsville.  I wasn't sure if I was going to spend the night in the mountains on my own -- too lonely -- but this little fella' welcomed me warmly, and Dad had left the cabin well-stocked with Vienna Sausages and coffee.  Of course I stayed and had a great time.  How could I not?  Look how beautiful these pictures are . . . . .
