With the name of "Congonhas of the Field", the city was created in December, 17th/1938. Ten years later, the words "of the Field" was suppressed, and the city, since then, is known as only "Congonhas", a very charming small town few hours drive from Belo Horizonte.

In 1985, a very important fact happened for the city, that was, UNESCO conferred the heading of "Cultural Patrimony of the Humanity" to the complex of the "Sanctuary of Good Jesus of Matozinhos".
It is definitely an important cultural center and deserved recognition to the admirable mining artistic patrimony, that attracts innumerable visitors, searching to better know the workmanship of our great master Antonio Francisco Lisbon, the "Aleijadinho". |

The most interesting thing to see in Congonhas (and it is not a "small thing" at all), is the great work of sculpture made by Aleijadinho in front of the Sanctuary of Good Jesus of Matozinhos.
Aleijadinho made himself the statues of all the prophets in natural size as you may see in these pitures. Definitely, it is something incredible to see and believe how come someone could ever do something like this. |

In 1800, "Aleijadinho" concluded the first lot of masterpieces of the Prophets and after two interruptions, finally, in 1805, the baroque statutory was also concluded.
Definitely, Congonhas is worth visiting it. |
