TURKEY I
Istanbul (12 million inhabitants), the biggest town in Turkey, was our destiny in October/2000. Turkey was a surprise for us! Istanbul city, especially, is clean, very urban and cosmopolitan as any other big city in Europe, despites being the only city in the world located in two continents: Europe and Asia, divided by the Bosphorus strait, between the Black and the Marmara seas.

One of the most famous tourist attractions in Istanbul is the "Blue Mosque".   The original name of the Blue Mosque is "Sultan Ahmet Camii" and it was built by this Sultan between 1606 and 1616. The stained-glass windows create luminous effects which reflects inside the whole Mosque. The "blue" of the Mosque's name comes from Iznik tiles which line the walls and its entire ceiling.

Istanbul is located at the same time in Europe and Asia. The strait of Bosphorus divides the city between these two continents and the Bosphorus Bridge (1973), the fourth longest in the world, links the European and Asian side.   A visit to Istanbul is not complete if one does not take a ferry cruise in the strait of Bosphorus, 32 km long, from 500m to 3 km wide. Well... we were tourists after all, so... The day we took the cruise of the Bosphorus was freeeeezing, but worth it every second. From the ferry, it's possible to see some tourist sights on both the European and Asian shores. It was definitely one of the most interesting tours we had the chance to take in lovely Istanbul.
