At one of the cycling rallies we used to go to, at Isleham, a village a couple of miles from me, they had a fun run. Ever since I was little I'd wanted to take part, but was always told by my parents that it was "too far" for me. (Think it started off as something like 8 miles, eventually cutting down to 2 1/2).

When I was 12, I was talking to a friend of mine about the (then) forthcoming Isleham Cycling and Sports event. We decided to enter the fun-run together.

Before the event, I spent many evenings getting ready for it by running down the road and back. Gave me a certain satisfaction to wear myself out in this way!!

Can't remember where I came in that first fun-run, but I can remember I finished the race and beat my friend :)

I continued to participate in the Isleham fun-run every year after the first time. I never really came anywhere, but I enjoyed the run. That was until 1994 when I was the 3rd woman over 16 to finish and got a nice little trophy for my effort :) The next year I was the first woman over 16 and so was wondering what I'd get in 1996! Unfortunately that wasn't to happen as the race was only made available to the Under 16's from then on :~(

In the January of 1997, I ran for the first time in 6 months due to various injuries and time-consuming activities. That was the last time I ran for another year. My knees had been giving me problems, and within a week of running, I was finding it too painful to walk, and was having to drag myself up the stairs to my room. Enough was enough, and I had to drag myself to the doctor.

The doctor mumbled some technical jargon about what was wrong with me. Basically I had to build up the muscles around my knees as my legs couldn't support them. It had been gradually getting worse for a long time, and he said I shouldn't run any more :~(

I've just started running again, and am taking it easy. Don't think it'll ever be the same again, but at least I'm able to run again :)
