Fresher's week 1995 was a time for making new friends. After me and Dad spending an hour driving around Birmingham looking for Newman, we found it! First person I met was my (then) neighbour Marie who seemed quite nice, so I was relieved. She'd already gone to dinner, so I went alone, and braved the meal while sitting with a bunch of third years who joined me. I ended up leaving half of what I got as I felt all eyes were on me!!!
Marie introduced me to everyone else on the third floor of A block (where we lived) as we all went down to the first Fresher's event : a welcome with snacks.
One day the girls wanted to go to a pub. Some lads we'd met recommended one called, "The Bale of Hay" where they'd just been, saying it was like an old men's pub. Being the stingy person I was, I didn't buy a drink, and being shy, didn't say much either. Me and one of the others just sat there while the others talked!!
On the Thursday night of Fresher's week, a fourth year lad told us, to our shock, that the "Bale of Hay" was a dodgy pub and we were lucky to get out of there alive! Needless to say we've never returned there!!
Friday night was Fresher's Ball night. I remember sitting in the bar with the others. Eventually a guy came on as Elvis. I was shattered, and even had a photo sneakily taken of me by one of the girls as I yawned! I decided that I'd go for a little sleep and then return later for the disco which wasn't to finish until 3am.
I did indeed return for the disco at about 11.30pm, fully refreshed, and full of energy! The girls saw a side to me they'd never encountered before, but have regretted ever since! Can't remember if I was, but at a guess, I'd say I was the first on the dance floor. Think Marie just about summed me up for Fresher's week when she said, "You seemed so quiet. Are you dancing or having an epileptic fit??!" As they used to say back home, what's a party if I'm not there?!? :)
Since Fresher's, I staked a life-long claim to my room. I proposed to take it with me when and if I graduated! It's the other's who always moved around. The third floor posse split more or less three ways, but I still see most of them. For our final year, however, the majority of us, after being kicked out of our rooms in favour of the male species living there, were relegated to the first floor. We survived!! :)
It was traditional for me, since Fresher's week, to go down the disco late on a Friday night. I made a few friends through dancing when the others choose to desert me!
I was never much of a drinker. I went down the bar about three times a year when people would wonder what was wrong with me! I only drank what was bought for me! I'd rather dance than drink anyway! Water is enough drink for me... :)

After three years of not going to a Christmas Ball, the girls said I had to go to my final year one (1998), so I did. Had a superb time! Me and two of my friends Jen and Rach managed to stay to the end which was good. Then I started my Saturday soon as I got back. Just didn't seem worth going to bed like the others did!!
