Most villages and towns organised annual flower shows with running races for the local youth. Many included grass track pedal bike races. My father and uncle both took part in the cycling races and were well known for this in the locality.
Uncle Bill had been born with club foot and had his legs broken and set to help correct this condition. His doctor recommended cycling as a good way to strengthen his legs. Despite having no calf muscle and walking with a pronounced limp he became one of the leading grass track riders in the country. In the summer he would pack up his job and live by travelling all over England, Scotland and Wales competing for cash prizes at flower shows and Highland games. My father only competed locally because he had the farm to run.
