In the Winter, the wash land beside the River Cam, which flows past Upware, was flooded and most years a large outdoor ice skating rink was formed. People from a wide area would come to take part in ice hockey games with sticks cut from the local hedgerows. In a good year we could skate on the lode as far as Burwell and Reach (some five miles). One year I remember the frost was so sharp that we could skate on the River Cam to Littleport and beyond. This was great fun. Farm workers were stood off because the land was frozen solid and they could not work. No-one complained because the skating was good that year.
