When I was fourteen years old we moved to a new council house in the village of Wicken about three miles from the farm. Can you imagine it : electric lights; a toilet that did not need emptying in a deep hole in the garden; a bath that we did not place in front of the fire; water straight from a tap; what luxury!!
By now the horses had been replaced by a tractor and we had a van for travelling to and from the farm. Fiddler continued to take me to Soham for school. Sometimes I would bike the three or four miles. By this time brother Alfred was at Chadacre agricultural college.
