Research;
- Write - neatly - a short
paragraph on time, for example the history of time, its importance to
society (ship's navigation), etc.
- Cut out examples of clocks
from magazines, etc. and annotate (short notes)
- Types of clocks
Construct - neatly - a spider graph (do not just copy this outline spider
graph )
Planning- draw up project and manufacturing plans

Materials For Graphics Project
. Card Materials Feather board
Ideas
Come up with at
least six different ideas in different materials

Try some innovative ideas such as replacing the hands with thin plastic
disks, use of reflective /mirror surfaces, clocks as a mobile, clocks built
into models - trains cars faces, etc.
Extra
teacher time may be available to those pupils who demonstrate that they are
willing to work towards a good exam result
THERE ARE
TWO CONTEXTS for you to choose from
RESEARCH CONTEXT A
Timepieces have been used in many cultures and throughout history for both
functional and decorative reasons. They often reflect something of the culture
from which they originate.
Investigate: Suggest a graphic product that is based on telling the time and
will reflect a particular culture.
OBJECTIVE 1
- Investigate timepieces from
different cultures and different times in history – make notes and
drawings of some of your findings.
- Investigate the different
kinds of people who use timepieces, both in the past and today.
- Compare different styles of
time pieces
- Carry out a product
analysis on a particular timepiece.
Decide on a particular style or culture that you may be able to design a
product for and write a clear statement under the heading of DESIGN BRIEF.
(Remember that your product is a graphic product and should use appropriate
methods and materials.)
THINGS TO DO
- Look in books, magazines or
CD-ROM for information about timepieces.
- Make notes, drawings and
collect pictures to make a display of your findings.
- Take photographs of
different styles of timepieces.
- Look at different styles of
timepieces that are available in the shops today. Make drawings, notes and
arrange pictures into different cultural groups.
- Investigate graphic
products that are made from paper, card or thin sheet materials.
- Talk to people from
different social and cultural groups and try to find out what kind of
things they like.
Before
you decide upon a design brief, you must be sure that there will be someone who
would like to buy such a product. How could you find that out?
RESEARCH CONTEXT B
Teachers use many different types of visual aids to enable students to
learn. Basic learning includes reading and writing, but because digital
readouts are now common place, young children have greater difficulty telling
the time on an analogue clock. Suggest a graphic product that would help
overcome this problem.
OBJECTIVE 1
- Investigate young children
– what kinds of things do they like?
- Investigate visual aids –
what do they do?
- Investigate how children
learn to tell the time – at what age?
- Investigate clocks – both
digital and analogue
- Investigate other methods
that are used to teach children to tell the time.
Decide on a type of product that will help solve the problem and write it
down under the heading of DESIGN BRIEF.
THINGS TO DO
- Look in places like
Mothercare and The Early Learning Centre.
- Look in shops that sell
clocks.
- Collect pictures from
catalogues.
- Look in the library for
books on childcare.
- Make drawings and notes on
some of the most useful information.
- Take photographs.
- Talk to people with
children or playgroup organisers
- When you write your design
brief you must be sure that the product that you intend to design and make
will be useful and would be able to be reproduced in quantity and sold.
