First win in Gaziantep after 9 years
Fenerbahce closed the gap on Galatasaray to one point at the top of the Turkish
Super League with a 2-0 away victory against Gaziantep on Sunday. This was Fener's first win at the Kamil Ocak
stadium for nine years and Gaziantep's first defeat in five matches since Samet Aybaba took over as manager. The
Yellow Canaries had the better chances in the first half and were rewarded just before the interval. Kennet Andersson
headed on a long Ali Akdeniz throw and Oktay Derelioglu chested down to volley home.
Gaziantep had a little more of the play in the second half but could not find much in the way of scoring chances.
The best came and went on 68 minutes when Fener keeper Rüstü Recber clawed away a 30-yard piledriver
from Mustafa Sahintürk that was heading for the top corner. Two of the Fener substitutes combined for the
second goal deep in injury time. Serhat Akin accepted a pass from former Gaziantep midfielder Hakan Bayraktar and
calmly dribbled round goalie Hasan Gültang, standing in for the injured Ömer Catkic, to score with ease.
"After we scored the opening goal, we did not lose concentration," said Fener manager Mustafa Denizli.
"The three points are very important. With Galatasaray losing, we've narrowed the difference between us. What
we need to do now is go on playing like Fenerbahce." Gaziantep press spokesman Kamil Gerecci admitted his
team had lost to a better side on the day: "Fener played a more organised team game. The way we played, we
would have been lucky to win."
