"Ladies and Gentlemen, the Chicago Theatre is Proud to Announce a First, the First Time Anywhere There has been an Act of this Nature, Not Only One Little Lady but Two.......

Roxie Hart and Velma Kelley!"

Your Case:

3x + 4y = -3

2x + y = 8

In order to combine to equations into one spectular performance, you must first cancel out one variable completely. For example, the easiest variable to cancel out in this case is the y because it has a variable already by itself. Thus, you need to multiply each part of the second equation by -4<the opposite reciprocal> in oorder to make the +4y cancel out.

Your new evidence: -8x -4y = -32

Your first equation: 3x + 4y = -3

Since your "y" values cancel out, you can combine the two equations:

-8x +3x = -32 -3 *Add your two equations together*

Your new equation becomes:

-5x = -35

x = 7 *Divide both sides by -5*

Now that you know that x = 7, you can get Mama to help you substiute this value back into one of the original equations. We'll choose:

2x + y = 8

2(7) + y = 8

14 + y = 8 *Multiply 2 times 2*

y= -6 *Subtract 14 from both sides*

The solution of a case should be written (x,y) so your solution to your case is

(7, -6)

"And that's good! Isn't it grand? Isn't it great? Isn't it swell?"
