Graphing

We have almost made it! Answer this last linear equation and we will be able to successfully enter Oz! The problem is 3x - 2y=2 and y= -1/2x +3. Here to help us is the Lion who recently received enough courage to lead us through this problem.

  • When solving a linear equation by graphing the first step is to put both of the equations in y= mx + b form. Since the second equation in this problem is already in that form you must only change the first equation.

y= 3/2x - 2

  • In order to get the problem to appear like this you must subtract 3x from both sides and then divide by -2.

  • After putting both equations in the right formula you must now plug them into your calculator. In order to do this you must first hit your y= button located near the top of your screen. After hitting your y= button enter your first equation into the Y1 and your second equation into the Y2!
  • Once you have entered in both equations you must then view the graph by hitting your graph button on your calculator. After hitting the graph button you can then see the intersection of the two lines. In order to see the point where the lines intersect you must hit the 2nd function and then the trace key. Scroll down to # 5: Intersect and hit enter four times. While hitting enter it will say first curve, second curve, guess, and then intersect.

The two points intersect at (2,2)!

y= 3/2x -2
y= -1/2x +3

HAHAHA! So we meet again my pretty! Well here is the real test, see if you can solve one of my worldly word problems. Here we go, you are on the decoration committee for a movie premiere for umm...lets just say The Wizard of Oz! You are in charge of buying balloons for the affair. You want to use both latex and mylar balloons. The latex balloons cost $.10 each and the mylar balloons cost $.50 each. You need 125 balloons and you only have $32.50 to spend. How many of each can you buy?

AND THE ANSWER IS:

(75,50)

Y= -x + 125
Y= -.10/.50 +32.50/.50

75 latex balloons and 50 mylar balloons! To solve this word problem you must first set up two linear equation. Latex balloons + mylar balloons = 125 and (.10) # of latex balloons + (.50) # of mylar balloons = 32.50. So, you then put your equations into y= mx + b form in order to plug them into the calculators. Your equations should then appear mylar = - latex + 125 and mylar = -.10/.50 + 32.50/.50. ( mylar= y and latex= x).

I'm MELTING...MELTING...MELTING!! Good job you have defeated the Wicked Witch and can now help return me safely home by taking me to Oz!
