What's the Ribbit With Algebra?
How Do You Solve Linear Equations? RIBBIT! RIBBIT!

www.purplemath.com

The Subsitution Method

1.) Solve for one of the variables.
2.) Substitute the expression from step 1 in other equation.
3.) Distribute
4.) Combine like terms
5.) Solve for the variable
6.) Plug in the found variable from previous step into the one of the original equations

3x + 4y = -4
x + 2y = 2

1.) x = -2y + 2
2.) 3(-2y + 2) + 4y = -4
3.) -6y + 6 + 4y = -4
4.) -2y + 6 = -4
5.) y = 5
6.) x + 2(5) = 2
........x = -8
Answer : (-8 , 5)

The Linear Combination Method

1.) Multiply one or both of the equations by a constant to obtain coefficients that differ only in
sign for one of the variabled to cancel out.
2.) Add revised equation from step 1 to other equation
3.) Combine like terms to solve for on variable.
4.) Plug in answer to one of the original equations

3x + 4y = -3
2x + y = 8

1.) -4(2x + y = 8)
2.) 3x + 4y = -3
.+ -8x - 4y = -32
-5x = -35
3.) x = -7
4.) 3(-7) + 4y = -3
y = 4.5
Answer : (-7 , 4.5)

The Graphing Method

1.) Put your two original equations into y = mx + b form.
2.) Plot your y intercepts.
3.) Find slope and sketch the lines.
4.) Find the point of intercection, which is your answer!
x + y = -7
2x - y = -2

1.) y = -x - 7
.... y = 2x + 2

2.)

A Word Problem to be Solved by One of these Methods!

The drama club sold 1500 tickets for the end-of-year performance. Admission prices were $12 for adults and $6 for students. The total amount collected at the box office was 16,200. How many STUDENTS attended the play?

1.) Set up your two equations to solve.
Solve by any method from above you would like.

a + s = 1,500
12a + 6s = 16,200

-6(a + s = 1,500)

-6a - 6s = -9,000
12a + 6s = 16,200
.....6a = 7,200
.......a = 1200

1,200 + s = 16,200
.......s = 300
Answer : 300 Students attended the play.
