Graphing

Steps:

1) find the x and y intercepts of both equations
2) graph the equations
3) find the point of intersection

Example: Solve the system of equations

3x + 9y = 18 equation 1

2x + 4y = 8 equation 2

1) find the x and y intercepts of equations 1 and 2

3x + 9y = 18 write equation 1

3(o) + 9y = 18 solve for y by plugging in 0 for x

(0,2)

3x + 9y = 18 write equation 1

3x + 9(0) = 18 solve for x by plugging in 0 for y

(6,0)

2x + 4y = 8 write equation 2

2(0) + 4y = 8 solve for y by plugging in 0 for x

(0,2)

2x + 4y = 8 write equation 2

2x + 4(0) = 8 solve for x by plugging in 0 for y

(4,0)

2) graph using the x and y intercepts found in step 1

3) find the point of intersection

the answer is (0,2)
