Penguinarific Algebra Two

On this page you will learn the things that your regular Algebra Two teacher is trying to teach you.  Algebra can be annoying and frustrating, but it can still be creative when you know what you're doing.  So...let's look at our options, shall we?

Problem #1

Word Problem

A Penguin has been frozen into an ice sculpture.  The sculpture's length is five times that of the length.  The area of the sculpture is 225.  What is the length?  The width?

A flying penguin ! Hear the call of an adult adelie penguin.

y+x=225

5x=y

x + 5x = 225

6x = 225

x = 37.5

y + 37.5 = 225

225-37.5 = y

y = 187.5

1- First make sure you understand what the question is asking.

2- Next, create your two equations.

3- Third, combine your equations to have just one, with only one variable.

4- add like figures

5- divide by the constant next to the variable

6- find your other variable by plugging in the variable you have just found.

Problem #2

Linear Combination

300 = 5r - 10p

450 = 3r + 10p

Emperor penguins with chicks. Hear the call of a male emperor penguin

300 = 5r - 10p

450 = 3r + 10p

750 = 8r

93.75 = r

450 = 3(93.75) + 10p

450 - 281.25 = 10p

168.75 = 10p

p = 16.875

1- Find a like term in both equations that cancel each other out.

2-Add the equations together, adding EVERYTHING

3- now only having one term, find the answer.

4- now with your found variable, plug it into either equation to find the other variable.

Problem #3

Substitution

h = 3x + 2

16 = 5x + h

Emperor chick loosing its down feathers. Hear the hungry call of an emperor penguin chick.
16 = 5x + 3x + 2

16 = 7x + 2

16 - 2 = 7x

14 = 7x

x = 2

h = 3(2) + 2

h = 6

1- substitute one variable for an equal equation.

2- Solve for x

3- add negative two to both sides

4- divide by seven

5- substitute the value for x into the equation h =

6- solve for h
