Colt's Algebra 2 Page

y = 2x and x + y =12   (4,8)  This is a substitution problem. First you substitute the 2x form the first problem into the second problem and you get 3x =12.now you divide everything by 3 and x = 4. now you plug the 4 into the second problem and get 4+y =12 Therefore y = 8
5x-2y = 4 and 3x + y = 9  (2,3) This is a linear combination equation. First you multiply the second equation by two so that the y's will cancel.Once the y's cancel you get 11x = 22 therefore x =2 . Now  you plug the 2 into the first problem and get 10- 2y = 4 which makes y = 3 .
