OF ALGEBRA II

TOPICS:

1. How to solve a linear equation
2. How to solve a literal equation
3. How to write an equation of a line in 3 forms.

1. How to solve a linear equation

ISOLATE THE VARIABLE!

5n + 11 = 7n - 9          Subtract 5n from each side

11 = 2n - 9                  Add 9 to each side

20 = 2n                       Divide each side by 2

10 = n                         Bingo

2. How to solve a literal equation

WORK IT OUT!

P =  2L + 2W            Subtract 2L from each side

P - 2L = 2W     &         Divide each side by 2

(P - 2L)/2  = 2W   &nbssp;  Bingo

3. How to write an equation of a line in 3 forms.

SLOPE-INTERCEPT FORM (Given the slope m and the y-intercept b, use this equation):

y = mx + b

POINT-SLOPE FORM (Given the slope m and a point (x1,y1), use this equation):

y - y1 = m(x - x1)

TWO POINTS (Given two points (x1,y1) and (x2,y2), use this formula: m =

(y2 - y1)/(x2 - x1)
