Hi,Welcome
to
my
algebra
web
page.I
will
cover
three
topics
with
examples
of
each.These
will
be
solving
literal
equations,
Solving
linear
equations,and
how
to
write
an
equation
for
a
line.
Solving
Literal Equations
Literal
Equation: an equation with more than one variable
| A=l*w Solve for l | Problem |
| A/w=l | Divide both sides by w |
That was easy right, so try a harder one.
| F=G* Mm/r2 Solve for G | Problem |
| F*r2=G*Mm | Multiply both sides by r2 |
| F*r2/Mm=G | Divide bothsides by Mm |
Solving
Linear Equations
Linear
Equation: an equation with one variable
| 5n +11=7n-9 | Problem |
| 11=2n-9 | Subtract 5n from both sides |
| 20=2n | Add 9 to both sides |
| 10=n | Divide both sides by 2 |
Easy right?--moving on...
| 3/7x +9=15 | Problem |
| 3/7x=6 | Subtract 9 from both sides |
| 3x=42 | Multiply both sides by 7 |
| x=14 | Divide both sides by 3 |
Writing
an Equation to a Line
Slope-intercept
Form: y=mx+b (where m = the slope and b = the y-intercept)
Point-slope
Form: y-y1=m(x-x1) (where m = the slope
and x1,y1=a set of points )
Standard
Form: ax+by=c (where a/b = the slope and -c = the y-intercept)
(sounds confusing - huh?, slow down - it's okay let's go one by one)
Slope -intercept Form
| y=mx+b (slope= -1/2 & a point(2,3) | Problem |
| 3= -1/2*2+b | Substitute |
| 3= -1+b | Multiply -1/2 by 2 |
| 4=b | Add 1 to both sides |
| y= -1/2x +4 | Fill in the Equation |
Not so hard, lets go on...
Point- Slope Form
| y-y1=m(x-x1) slope= 3/2 point=(0,1) | Problem |
| y--1=3/2(x-0) | Substitute |
| y+1=3/2 x | Subtract 0 |
| y=3/2x-1 | Subtract 1 from both sides |
Alright here goes another....
Standard
Form
(remember
a/b=slope and -c=y-intercept)
| y=3/2x-1 Rewrite to Standard Form | Problem |
| 2y=3x-1 | Multiply both sides by 2 |
| 2y-3x = -1 | Subtract 3x from both sides |
| 3x-2y=1 | Transform to Standard Form |
Good Job!!
Thanks for
learnin' with me!
