How to Solve a Linear Equation
7 + 2(x + 1)  =  8x
        3               5

105 + 30(x + 1)  =  120x

105 + 30x + 30  =  120x

30x + 135  =  120x

135  =  90x

x  =  1.5

Problem

Multiply by 15.

Distribute the 30.

Combine like terms.

Subtract 30x from both sides.

Divide both sides by 90.

How to Solve a Literal Equation
W  =  JQ  ; for J

J  =  W
        Q

Let's look at another example:

   C  =  Q ; for V

VC  =  Q

V  =  Q
          C

Problem.

Divide both sides by Q.

Problem

Multiply both sides by V.

Divide both sides by C.

Writing an Equation for a line:

Point Slope form

(0,4), m=2

y - 4  =  2( x - 0)

Slope-Intercept form

y - 4  =  2x - 0

y  =  2x + 4

Standard form

-2x + y  =  4

2x + y  =  -4

point and the slope

substitute for the variables

distribute the 2 to the x and 0

add 4 to both sides

Subtract 2x from both sides

Multiply both sides by -1 to make the 2x positive
