Briana's math Boutique
Welcome to my math help page. I will cover three topics. Solving Linear equations, literal equations, and how to write an equation of a line using all three forms.

Solving
Linear Equations
Linear Equation- an equation with one variable
| (3/7)x +9 = 15 | Problem to solve |
| (3/7)x = 6 | Subtract 9 from each side |
| x = (7/3)(6) | Multiply each side by (7/3), the reciprocal of (3/7) |
| x = 14 | Answer |
That was a more basic one lets move on to something a little more difficult
| 3x + (x/5) -5 = (1/5) + 5x | Problem |
| 15x + x -25 = 1 + 25x | Multiply everything through by 5 to kill the denominator |
| 16x -25 = 1 + 25x | Collect like terms |
| -9x -25 = 1 | Subtract 25x from both sides |
| -9x = 26 | Add 25 to both sides |
| x = (-26/9) | Divide both sides by -9 |

Solving Literal
Equations
Literal
Equation- an equation that has more than one variable
| P= 2r + 2w Solve for w | Problem |
| P- 2r = 2w | Subtract 2r from each side |
| ( P- 2r/2) = w | Divide each side by 2 |
I know you think wow that was easy so lets get a little harder
| H = l2Rt Solve for R | Problem |
| ( H/ l2) = Rt | Divide both sides by l2 |
| ( H/ l2t) = R | Divide both sides by t |

* Slope- intercept Form
is written in the form y= mx+b. The m is the slope and the b is the y-intercept.
| 2x + 3y = 12 | Solve for y to get it in Slope-intercept form |
| 3y = -2x + 12 | Subtract 2x from each side |
| y = (-2/3)x + 4 | The equation is now in Slope-intercept form |
| **** Y-intercept = 4 | Plot the point (0,4) on the graph |
| **** Slope = (-2/3) | Plot your second point by moving down 2 and right 3 |
* Point-Slope Form-
the formula for point-slope is ***** y - y1 = M(X - X1)
| **** Slope = (-2/3) ***** Point = (0,4) | Use the slope & a point from the line in the previous example |
| y-y1 = m(x-x1) | The equation for Point-Slope |
| y -4 = (-2/3)(x -0) | Plug in the slope and the points |
| y -4 = (-2/3x) | You have solved the equation and gotten it in point-slope form |
* Standard Form- all
the variables are on one side of the equal sign and the constant number
is on the other
side.
******* You can take either equation
that you already have and turn it into Standard form. Lets use the
Point-Slope Form equation.
| y -4 = (-2/3x) | The original equation |
| -4 = (-2/3x) -y | Subtract y from both sides |
| 4 = (2/3x) + y | Divide both sides by a negative |
| *** You now have the equation in Standard form |
