He will certainly need all the nutrition he can get. Have you decided on a name yet? Poor little thing though, being so sick. Has the vet suggested using a vaporizer to help with is breathing? I know you can with older cats, but I am not too sure if he is too young. As far as names, I am not too creative in giving "cat" names. Although JoAnn suggested "Grande!" as in the large one so he did not get a complex over his size. All of ours have people names :-) Patrick was named that because he is all orange and reminded us of a little Irish boy. Elizabeth was orginally Anthony, till we found out she was not a boy, lol, and her name suits her!! Poor Rubin was a "Ruby" for over a year, late bloomer. And Sophia for her beauty, and Zachary, well you look at him and say that is a Zachary :-) Our dogs, believe or not where named after our Grandmother's, mine, my great grandmother (Lilian) and JoAnn's grandmother (Caroline) As a teenager I once had a kitten that was all cream colored, med length hair that I called "Bear", he was shaped like a bear when he got about 1year old. Good Luck with him, looking forward to more reports, he sounds sooooooooo cute! Date sent: Sun, 13 Sep 1998 09:21:59 -0400 Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Good morning! Just wanted to give everyone another kitty update. The kind woman who works at Angela's vet's office took all 3 of the kittens that mom showed her! That means that she only has to find homes for two more, the little tiger and the solid black one. Please keep your fingers crossed and your eyes and ears open for someone needing more cuteness in their lives. Also, I wanted to let everyone know that Petsburgh is now up and running. My community leader name there is aarescue for my Mom's Angel Animal Rescue group. Several of you have asked me how to make the move from Heartland or wherever you are currently residing in geocities, so I thought I would send the info to everyone... "For everyone that is wondering how to make the move the Petsburgh from you previous home, Geocities has made it quite simple. Log into your file manager and scroll down to very bottom and click on 'move to new' address. You will be taken through a series of questions where you can either pick from a list of available pages in Petsburgh or type one in directly that you know is available. Geocities will automatically move your entire page and leave a signpost pointing to your new page for a month." love and fuzziness, hope ---------------------------------------- Date sent: Sun, 13 Sep 1998 10:53:51 -0400 To: felvtalk@MailingList.net From: three ring circuits Subject: Re: Re: Re: Re: Name suggestions - to Brenda Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Hi Gina! Yup....... he's using his litterbox thank goodness - found a tiny poop in there this morning :-) He's still SOOOOO sick though - I got him to eat literaly 1 tsp. this morning of IAMS kitten food that I mashed up with some KMR on it and then warmed it up. He's soooo stuffy and sneezy that he can't breathe - but despite it all, ALL he wants is to sit on someone's lap and purr....... No name yet..... still thinking about it - we take a long time in this house to find THE Purrfect name! Keep suggesting though.... I'm assuming you're giving Poncho the Pet Tinnic (I'm sorry I can't remember). As long as Jodi is eating and playing, she may be feeling better because of her lower weight, as you said. Keep up the great work! It really helped with his congestion. I also put in a little Vick's into the hot water it gave it like a vaprorizer effect since I did not have one, I ran the hot water in both the shower and sink. Any luck with the bottle feeding? JoAnn bottle fed Rubin and his brother, she used the "mother's milk" and heated it the same way as a baby bottle (testing it the same way too :-). She held him in her hand tummy down and fed him the same way you do a baby with the bottle at a 45 degree angle. Ensuring that air bubbles do not get in, when he has had enough bubbles come out around his mouth. He will also have to burped, just gently rub his belly. It is basically the same as feeding a baby. If you cannot get to a petstore I read that a doll bottle will do the same, check the opening it might not be big enough , you can use a hot needle to open it up. A syringe works just as good, you just have to be careful that too much does not get into him. Good Luck!! I like the name Elmo, that is very cute. They may help to get rid of the crusty buildup (they'll make him sneeze, probably, and that may help clear his little nose-ola), and you can also use that same solution to wipe off his little nose and eyes all the time. Have you thought of putting him in a steamy room, like a bathroom or etc.? That may help. Also, you might want to consider giving him a teensy bit of Vit C, just to bowel tolerance so that he gets some immune system boosting. I don't know what the right dosage would be for a baby his size, but the vet might know, or possibly someone else on the list. Did you say he's on antibiotics? If so, was that 'cause they were afraid he'd get pneumonia (bacterial)? I'm always really careful with antibiotics, 'cause they don't do a thing for viral stuff, like upper respiratory infections. They CAN be really helpful in battling bacterial pneumonia, though, so a lot of vets prescribe them for that. Do you think your new kitty might slurp up a bit of plain yogurt? That would help keep the antibiotics from killing all the good bacteria in his intestinal tract and etc. Good luck, and give him a gentle pansa (tummy) rub from me and the gatos fregados. That may help. I was just going to write and suggest the same thing. I would turn on the shower with extremely hot water and fill the sink with hot water and let the whole room steam up. Then, you would probably have to hold him up a little bit because there won't be much steam near the floor. It couldn't hurt until you were able to get a humidifier. Worth a try. He is probably not eating 'cause he can't smell anything (and also 'cause he probably feels pretty darn pooty). So, clearing his little nose may help a lot in that respect. Once he can smell, his appetite may pick up significantly. If not, then forcefeed him. Using that little bottle isn't hard at all. I found one at the local PetsMart, and it was no problem to fill it and feed the little ones. Just squeeze a tiny bit of the KMR onto his lips and see if he laps it up. If not, you may have to force his mouth open and squeeze the food into it. If he won't respond with bottle feeding, try syringe feeding (I got my syringe at PetsMart, too), where you put the bottom part in his mouth and gently depress the syringe as he swallows. Don't overfeed him, 'cause that'll just give him tummy trouble. Give him a little at a time (gosh, that takes patience like you wouldn't believe!), and keep him warm. The eating and the warmth are really important, because he can get sapped of energy and strength really quickly, and chilling is really tough on little kittens. The idea of putting a couple of bowls of water on top of the heater is a good one. Anything that'll humidify the air and help clear all the crap in his lungs and lining his throat, etc. You're doing really well with him. I can tell he's in good hands! He had a bit of a cold but is doing better. He loves to play with his brother HB and chasing the fake mice. He thinks he's quite a hunter. He's also quite a lover. He crawls up on my pillow every night demanding , and getting, hugs and petting. He likes to nibble my nose and chin. He is a silky black. His fur is so soft, not long though and he has the greenest eyes I've ever seen. He has adopted Roku and keeps her clean. He likes to lay on my lap and so does she. Roku kneads his back and belly and he just lays there. Thank you for letting me keep your Merlin's memory going through my Merlin.
