YAHOO!!! the little peep is here in my bathroom right now and WHAT a sweetie he is! I took him immediately to my vet who took one look at him and said NO WAY he's 8 weeks old -he's put him more at about 6 weeks and he only weighs 14 oz.! YIKES! I knew he was scrawny but my vet confirmed it - however , he did say he's seen " a lot worse" so I suppose that's something good..... AARGH! Looks like I definitely have a lap kitty - as soon as I sit down , he's on my lap, and PURRS up a storm...:-)))))))) He's still got his URI so the shelter sent me home with Clavamox and my vet gave me some Petinic to give him. So far he's eaten maybe 1 tsp. of IAMS kitten food and the vet said I should get him to eat about 1 tsp. - 4 to 5 times a day. I hope this little guy makes it ... everyone cross your fingers please and keep the name suggestions coming! BTW.... he's a cream colored tabby with a little white chin it looks like and some white around his eyes.... I know we went thru every kind of kitten food with ours before we found one that they liked. Congrats! I'm sure that feels like a tremendous weight has been lifted off of your shoulders. As for a name for the little one - I'd like to suggest Phoenix, the one that rose from the ashes. It would be rather symbolic of your situation regarding Cosmo & Hershey (*You* have risen from the ashes of heartbreak) & also symbolic of the little guy's start in life both as the runt of the litter & then being in a shelter. He rose from the "ashes" to be the outgoing dominant one in his litter to find a wonderful new home with you. I look forward to hearing that he is home with you & to what his new name will be. He'll probably tell you that it is something *completely* different from all the suggestions you've received. :-) Diane & the gang __________________________ Diane- First of all, I'm So sorry to hear about your little guy testing postive to FeLV after so many years.... I'm VERY confused though - how could that happen after so many years of vaccinations like you said.... I don't get it. I really like the name suggestion you've made for my new little one and will most certainly pass it on along to my family here! I like the symbolism behind it a LOT!! :-) I'm just So happy to have him home and out of that "sneeze room" where I don't think he had much chance of ever getting better. But now I'm worried as even the vet confirmed how skinny and bony he is with no meat or muscle at all.... Hopefully now that's he's here with me though he'll fill out quickly. I'm absolutely in LOVE at this point ......he's a purr baby and NEEDS to be on a lap it appears at all times...... (beam..... beam....... beam........) I'll keep everyone posted as to how he's doing and I'll be taking him back in a week to be rechecked at my vet and then we'll talk about when he can start getting his series of kitten shots. I know our guys where litter box trained at 4 weeks of age, their first litter box was a shoebox. What about the size, can he get in it? If he does not go soon I would call the vet. The felv vaccine has the lowest rate of protection...about 85 percent. I told her that I understood the risks and that Jodi still had a better chance with me than she did at a shelter--which was where she was headed. She said that she just wanted to make sure I realized what could happen. She said that she has pet owners who come in and their cats are diagnosed with felv and they accuse her of not actually vaccinating them in the first place. She said that happens a lot and she hates it, but that is just how it is right now. I feel bad sometimes because I have put Jodi at risk....but on the other hand, she is a totally different cat than the pathetic ball of fur who came to me in July. She is so happy....and lives on my feet. I still think I did the right thing. A few of you have asked for updates on them. Poncho is a bit anemic still. Pale gums...but doing great otherwise. Jodi is just finishing up the Clavamox for her gingivitis and gum infections and she has drops for her ear infection. She is still about 9 1/2 lbs. which is way down for her, but she almost acts like she feels better now that she isn't so fat. When she lived with my friend...even before the dog came. She seldom played. Now, she is always smacking at Poncho or batting a toy or piece of paper around the floor. She used to just sit around and now she acts like she feels really good so I am not going to stress over the weight loss. She is eating good and will gain if she needs it I guess. For now, all seems well on the feline front at the Holderby home. TRUE?? Ummm....... WHY do you add the water? I did put a little on my fingers for him to lick off and then later my husband got him to drink maybe? 1/2 tsp. from a tiny flat plate. Should I have added water to it? I intend to keep a close eye on him for sure . I'm a little concerned as he hasn't used the litterbox at all since he's been home - about 7 hrs. now. Wonder if this is normal - I mean... it's not like he's got "that much in him " I suppose.... I didn't realize you could get a powdered kind - can I find it in a petstore too? I just took about 1/2 tsp. of KMR and mixed it into about 1 tsp. of IAMS canned kitten and warmed it in the microwave. He ate about half of it - poor little guy is SO stuffed up - but ALL he wants to do is be on someone's lap!! I'm SOOOOOOO in love I can't stand it :-)))))) Right now my son ( who's as nuts as me ) said he's going to sleep in the bathtub tonight ( and he's 5 '10" !! ) so the little peep won't be all alone all night.
