Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Deb, Many many years ago, I to saw a kitten at the pound that was SO ugly, I took her because I thought no one else would. I would like to say she turned out to be the prettiest cat I have ever seen, but alas, she remained ugly. But she was one of the best cats I have ever had and lived to a ripe old age of 22! She helped me raise my kids. She was the grand dam of the house for many many years. barb ---------------------------------------- From: Newtanator@aol.com Date sent: Fri, 11 Sep 1998 19:44:11 EDT To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Hershey's latest FIP ELISA test / new kitty ! We always found that despite the size, that Baytril was always pretty effective in fighting infections. I know from past postings other people have found the same thing with the Clamovox. I hope that he starts to feel better! If so - let me give you some probable good news...if the cat is exposed later in life, they tend to live longer and more healthily with the virus than those exposed as kittens (though as we know from this list - with new ideas for management, even positive kittens are living much longer!). I lost the last of my "positively positives" last January to old age. A highschool friend had found her about 21 years ago - and she was guesstimated to be 2 at that time, though actual age was anywhere from 18 months to who knows. So Ghost was at least 22 when she died in January. Her granddaughter Ishtar was 17 when she died a year earlier. We figure both of them were exposed about 14 years ago, because I took two of Ishtar's kittens, and Muffin turns 15 this year - and he is negative, as was his sister (I lost Biscuit to cancer 2 years ago), so the exposure had to have happened after I took the kittens. The only sign I had that there was any problem with these two is that Ghost had some tooth damage and an injury that took about twice as long on antibiotics to clear up as a cat with a normal immune system takes; and both had intestinal problems with food - diarrhea if I fed them anything but Sensible Choice (or chicken baby food). One other thing - since you said Wiley was recently diagnosed - and you've been getting him shots all along - take him back in 3 months and get him re-tested. After Ghost and Ishtar came to live with me, Muffin *did* test positive. I put him in the back room with them for 3 months, and then had a friend who is a vet-tech come and test the others - and she insisted on testing the three. Muffin tested negative. G & I both still tested very strongly positive. I isolated Muffin for another 3 months - and he's tested negative twice since. Since I know it isn't genetics (his father was also his uncle, who died a year before they came to live with me, and probably also of the disease; plus the girls never threw off the disease), I can only assume that the shots gave his immune system enough ammunition to throw off the virus. I also know it wasnt' a false positive - we had him tested twice; he was exhibiting symptoms of real problems; and his white cells were abnormal. I can only hope that Wiley has the same results! I just got back from the vet (for the second time this week). Panda has been on Immunoregulin which doesn't seem to be doing any real good (although it hasn't hurt either). The vet is trying a new antibiotic, Clavamox, for the very nasty infection in his mouth. The poor guy has been on antibiotics for so many years now, but apparently this is the first time he had a pill that was a decent size to hide in his mouth and then spit out 15 minutes or so later...I found 2 of them this morning...so now I follow him around and when he sits down to groom, I sit right next to him :-) I guess I'm spoiling his fun! The vet was able to order Acemannan and it will be in Monday. At that time, (or most probably on Tuesday, when I have another appointment) he'll be started on the Acemannan and probably Interferon (again). Panda is holding his own for now. I can't say it's the way I want to see him...but he's "OK". Thank you everyone, so much, for caring. Barbara, I'm so sorry about Ninja. We all understand and grieve with you. Date sent: Fri, 11 Sep 1998 20:31:12 -0600 Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Debbie, I know how you feel about new kittens. I had a lady call me and say they had found a kitten in the alley about 8-10 weeks old. They had a rottweiler and two coon hounds and couldn't keep it. Someone had told her I took in kittens. There must be a sucker sign in my yard. Well, Tonight I went over and picked him up. He's gray and a sweetie. He just walked right in like he belongs. He goes to the vet Tuesday for his checkup and shots. By the way, his name is Saigo. That means LAST in Japanese. And he is. Roku the baby has a bit of URI. She's on Clavamox liquid. She still hasn't been tested for FeLV. She'll stay no matter the result. Jack, my deaf boy, has finally stopped the loud crying. He just does it now when he gets alone in a room and can't find anyone. Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net AWwwwwwwwwww barb :-) thanks...... Yup.... I was back today to visit the little guy and I thought to myself "WHY on earth did I pick HIM?" as he's SOOOO funny looking and scrawny ! I was sitting there looking around at all those other GOREGEOUS plump fluffy kitties and here he was all skin and bones and BIG BIG out -of -proportion ears.....But.... when he sat on my lap and looked up into my eyes and then managed to crawl up my chest to my collar bone, and then kept rubbing his little dirty face all over my chin , I KNEW why! Of course, he had to sneeze all over my neck repeatedly, but as I said, when I felt him licking my chin I knew it was meant to be. :-)))))))) Who can explain love, right?! So, I only hope I'm as lucky as you to have this little guy around for 22 yrs. too. This little guy was tested at the shelter for FeLV ( and he was negative thank goodness )but they said he's not old enough for the other test. Of course , I"m a nervous wreck about that too - and after my last experience with FIP and my poor Cosmo who I also got at this shelter.... I probably won't relax about that either for I don't know how long! > Debby, & the HBG (the HairballGang) ---------------------------------------- Date sent: Fri, 11 Sep 1998 23:05:24 -0700 From: Francine Prager To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Panda Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Hi Gina, Thanks for the warning...I'll be watching carefully.
