Although the pain never really goes away, it does ease enough for the tears to stop and for you to remember the good times you had with Ninja. Meantime, know for certain that you did everything you could do, and that you have so many friends on this list who understand what you are going through. Rats!!! With regard to cats and their seasons, most cats will keep coming into season (the intervals vary, some have very short intervals) until they are mated. Many will also show incredible, previously unknown Houdini tactics to get out to join the "smiling kitty" so you must really be careful. In KwaZulu-Natal where I live (South AFrica) we have just experienced an incredibly mild winter - hardly any cold days at all - with the result that there has been no break in the arrival of kittens at all. Cats have come into season and kittens have been born right through winter. I have never known this to happen before in 12-odd years of being in animal welfare. It is very scary for a small rescue project like KITTEN ACTION and my advice to you, is don't take too many chances and get that mommy cat spayed as soon as you can. Sorry for the Off Topic but wanted to share the above with anyone who is wondering about getting a mommy cat spayed. Hugs and (no) kittens! It's a thought.... He is willing, though, to spay a cat that has only just gotten pregnant....and t h a t is a horrible thought to me......... Yippee! Finally...I can contribute a little something worthwhile.... When my little Poncho came in heat the first time (the point at which I discovered that she was indeed a SHE! DUH!) I called and talked to my vet's receptionist about it. She said that they usually charge a little more to spay any animal that is in heat but that as far as physical complications, it didn't affect anything. When I called to check on her later that day after surgery, she told me that yes, she had definitely been in heat...I was asking how much more it was going to cost. She told me that although it complicates matters somewhat when a dog is in heat and has the surgery, it was pretty insignificant with a cat and she wasn't even going to charge extra for it. Poncho did great and is now a 9 1/2 lb. fat, sassy chick with the ultimate 'cat attitude'.....I don't regret the decision to do the surgery then at all. I'm sure that your Ninja is waiting for you to come out and play. Time will heal that hole, and you will be filled with beautiful memories. And now, a request: I have just been told that my Wiley (aka: Ted) is FeLV+. I cried, having lost two beautiful boys 12 years ago to this nasty disease. This time I knew better, and Wiley has been vaccinated all along. He's spent most of his 10 ½ years as an indoor cat, but really loves being outside. (I only let him out in supervised situations, now) I have been searching the internet for answers, and thanks to some wonderful web pages, I now have hope. This does not have to be a death sentence for Wiley. I ask that all of you who see this offer up a thought for his return to health and happiness. Thank you , sue ---------------------------------------- Date sent: Fri, 11 Sep 1998 08:25:43 -0400 From: Kathy Giddings To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Welcome Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Sue, Welcome to you and Wiley. My prayers and thoughts are with you at this awful time...... I know how terrible it is to lose a kitty to a ruthless disease having lost my Cosmo to FIP just a few months ago... I cried a lot of it out last night. I feel better today - I even dared to wear my contacts! I didn't want to go home last night to my empty apartment. I cried all the way home and my ex-boyfriend (who was extremely rude to me last week) called me from his work. I was bawling and it was a short conversation. Ten minutes later he was at my house so I could cry on him. I swear, he's two different people. That helped a lot. I was much more peaceful this morning when I woke up. When the time comes, I'm going to raise some lucky kitty (or two) the way Ninja should have been raised from the start. The last half of her life was definitely the best; she had a great home with me. Problem is, now I have to find a new friend to manage me and my house! Ninja had everything under control for me. b ---------------------------------------- Date sent: Fri, 11 Sep 1998 12:02:16 -0400 To: felvtalk@MailingList.net From: three ring circuits Subject: RE: Hershey's latest FIP ELISA test / new kitty ! Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net With all the sad news on the list lately, I've hesitated posting my own good news... but Kathy G. said it would be fine so here goes! Last week I took Hershey back in to my vet for his 4th FIP ELISA test and it came back even LOWER this time - 1:80 down from last month of 1:160 and the month before 1:320!! YAHOO! My vet was VERY encouraged and said once he sees a CHANGE in the titer like he's been seeing in Hershey that it goes NEGATIVE within a matter of weeks!!I've been DYING to get a new kitty and finally he told me I could go ahead and get another one at this point !!! I'm SOOO HAPPY !:-) So..... I went back to our local shelter ( where Cosmo came from -my FIP Kitty -and where I said I'd NEVER go again! ) and the day we were there ( last Sat. ) there was a group of THE filthiest flea-infested kittens I'd ever seen that had just come in. Nobody was even sure of their age. And.... if they were less than 8 weeks old, technically they weren't supposed to accept them or if they did, put them to sleep right away. LUCKILY, someone lied at the shelter and snuck them in as they were SOOO adorable but filthy and pathetic looking - all med/long haired, BTW. They stuck them back in their "sneeze room" and I saw them there - pure chance as I never usually go in there. Anyhow... there are 5 kittens and 4 of them were huddled in the back of the cage, but this one feisty one ( the RUNT of the litter - a little cream colored male tabby ) was trying to climb up the rungs of the cage and was SCREAMING and STARING into my eyes. Honest! I didn't imagine it! My daughter ( age 16 ) was with me and said the same thing , how he was looking right at us as if to say "GET ME OUT OF THIS PLACE!" I couldn't get him out of my mind so went back the next day to see him. By this time they'd given him a bath so he was a little more presentable looking - but one of those kittens that's SOOOO ugly that he's adorable! His ears are WAaaaaaay too big for his head - he really looks like a little mouse! I took him out of the cage and held him and he immediately climbed up my neck and nuzzled in under my chin and when I started petting him he started purring right away. I was hooked!! So...... you guessed it. I've put in to adopt him ( and THANK GOD he tested negative for Feluk.... they haven't tested him yet for Feline Aids as they said he's too young - true????? ) so hopefully this would/will be negative too. I honestly don't know much about FIV..... couldn't he only have it if his mommie did???? Does anyone on the list know how OLD he has to be to be tested for Feline Aids??? They're saying he's between 7-8 weeks old at this point I think. He's a real sweetie - I've been going to see him every day and he just snuggles in to my neck and purrs.. but of course now he has a cold and is on Clavamox... and he still is very scrawny looking ( weighs just about 1 lb. ) so I'm anxious to get him home and start to plump him up and give him some Barley cat and vitamin C! Maybe some Pet-tinic too as he was SOOO flea infested??? Echinacea?? May get him tomorrow....... if not, then probably Monday. Sorry I haven't posted about any of this beforehand ... I sorta felt with all the bad news on the list that I shouldn't but I suppose hearing GOOD news for a change is nice :-) Thanks for listening everyone . :-) Oh... and I'm looking for NAME SUGGESTIONS - he's such a fighter - even the lady at the shelter said she's never seen such a little one with "such a will to survive and be noticed". When she goes to put food in the cage , he pushes his way up to the front to be sure he gets his share.... LOL! As for the name situation: Go to www.bowwow.com.au/ This site is really cute. It lists all the names for both cats and dogs. The most popular ones as well as their meaning. (Although some names like Claudius weren't found.) But it's a start and you might find one that is fitting for the little fiesty guy. That's how I see my Indiana Jones. Not only does he look exactly like Merlin, he has many of his loving traits. ( and several of his own little stinker traits) Every time I look at him as he dashes here and there, or tackles one of the bigger cats I see Merlin, as he should have been. I get such joy from that I can't tell you. barb ---------------------------------------- END
