In a natural environment the kittens can nurse for up to 6 months or more. It's only people usually who remove them from the mother at 6, 8 weeks to place for adoption or sale. Of course, as somebody else mentioned, some mothers stop nursing earlier, but if left alone and not offered solid food too soon they will nurse longer. I had one cat who nursed for at least 6 months. A couple of the kittens were bigger than she was by that time. It was quite funny looking. Also, as mentioned, female cats will come into heat after birth from a few days after birth to a few weeks. If you want to let mommy nurse for awhile don't spay her yet, but of course you will have to keep her inside for the duration. :) Brenda..... ---------------------------------------- From: "Moermond, Barbara" To: "'felvtalk@mailinglist.net'" Subject: Final Ninja news - long Date sent: Thu, 10 Sep 1998 09:31:24 -0500 Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net My baby's at the Bridge. She fought so hard last weekend. We were up all night on Friday and I thought it would be Saturday morning. But while I was waiting for my friend's mom to pick us up, she started eating. And when we were waiting outside, she was yelling at me. When we got to the vet's, she was walking around the room yelling at me; telling me that she hates it at the vet's and why did I bring her there again? Then she jumped up on one of the chairs and sat there like the queen she is. Her RBC was down to 18% just since the previous Monday (22%) and her gums were tacky, so we gave her some subcutaneous fluids and they sent the bag home with me. When we got back home, I put her down in the elevator and when the door opened, she walked straight to our door and waited for me to open it. She then walked calmly in and went to her treat dish and finished up the last of the baby food that was there. So I gave her more and she was excited and scarfed it all up. She got more and more restless as the day passed and she had some problems with her breathing around 1030p and I called the vet (she'd given me her home number so I wouldn't have to wait until Tuesday if anything changed). And we decided to hold off on more fluids because she was concerned that fluid was building up in Ninja's lungs and causing the problems with her respiration. Her breathing was normal by morning and she was even eating dry food on Sunday, but it was too much for her and she just shut down. She spent the last day or two just laying there with her eyes open. The vet came over in the afternoon. While Ninja and I were waiting, she came out from under the bed on her own. Well, the poor baby had diarrhea and then threw up - basically dry heaves because she stopped eating Sunday. I brought her into the living room, and we lay side by side and I pet her and brushed her and talked to her about all the good times we had and that she would have again at the Bridge and that all the fur-babies that went ahead will take care of her. Of course, a friend of mine just told me that Ninja's probably already bossing all the other kitties around:-). Could very well be. I became very calm about an hour before the vet was to arrive. I know it was Ninja's time, but I miss her terribly. I keep thinking she's coming around the corner and is going to walk up to me and yell at me for something. I carried her down to the vet's car. My little Ninja-pie. I'm having her cremated. I miss her so much!!!!!!!!! I want to thank all of you again for being here. This group of people has made this more bearable for me and for others I'm sure. Being able to communicate with people who feel the same depth of love for their kitties that I do is a wonderful experience. Thank you again. So right now I've got her in the house, and have blocked the dog door (which is how everyone gets in and out) and everyone is supposed to take care when going in and out to make sure she doesn't slip out (right now she's in my room where there is food, water, and cat box) while I am cleaning house. My question is..how long is a cat in heat for? or is that another one of those it depends on the cat things..how do I determine when to book her spaying before she goes into heat again? (I've heard that once they start going into heat and don't get pregnant they can go back into heat a few days later?) --fuguee (and daria..wondering why she can't go outside and play with the nice male kitty) ---------------------------------------- From: BMWCON@aol.com Date sent: Thu, 10 Sep 1998 13:33:05 EDT To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: In Heat (was gnarly breath) Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Does anyone know if there is a list similar to this one for cats with FIV? ---------------------------------------- From: GinaTex@aol.com Date sent: Thu, 10 Sep 1998 15:09:30 EDT To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Final Ninja news - long Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Hi Barb We are so sorry to hear about Ninja. Ninja fought for so long just to be with you, and I'm sure she knew how much you loved her. Another friend of mine (also named Barbara - but not on this list) lost her precious kitty "Gigi" in June of this year. She had been in touch with an animal communicator (Morgen), and when she called her to tell her of Gigi's passing, Morgen said Gigi had already told her, and gave her a poem to give to her meowmy Barbara. Whether or not you believe in animal communicators, I wanted to share this poem with you and the list. Kat (New Jersey) SONG OF GIGI The greatest gift that this world can give is to laugh and learn and love and live. It's not the end but the beginning, to be free of this case. My wings and freedom I am loving. Do not mourn my death but celebrate my life for I am now free of the pain and the strife. It's time to let go, it's time to set me free. God will grant us peace and tranquility. I'm so proud of you and the lessons you've learned. For all you did I am grateful and from fear you have turned. Fear has no place when there's love and laughter. Don't you know, my dear child, it is this I've been after? To teach you the way God would have you be. To look through his eyes, only love you will see. I love you, my dear, with every breath I do so. I have loved how we played and I've watched you grow To a vision of loveliness so full of light. Your happiness is a gift to me, in it I delight. So hold me close to your heart and set me free. Our souls will be together for eternity. I am that still, small voice whispering in your ear That you may know God's will and his words you will hear. I am your gift that was sent from above To teach you the lessons of laughter and love. I love you, Mommy, now and forever. I just wanted to let everyone know that Geocities will be opening a brand new neighborhood today -- all for pets. The new neighborhood has not been officially announced yet, but I know because I am going to switch from being a community leader in HotSprings to this new hood 'Petsburgh' (yep, cute name isn't it??). Anyway, I have noticed from the postings that a lot of you have pages in geocities and if you want to move the new burgh or start a brand new page there, I thought I'd let you know so that y'all get get good address numbers! I know in the grand scheme of life this isn't important, but a nice round number is always easier to remember. Also, if any of you need help setting up new pages or don't know how to make the move (geo has something set up so everything can be moved in one big swish of the tail) -- let me know! Our babies should be up on display for everyone to see! If you would like to make a page, but don't have a way to scan pictures, contact me privately and I can give you my address. I can scan the pictures and then email them to you or post them where you can download them or something. If you want the pictures back please send a self-addressed stamped envelope. Well, anyway, we talk more about this not on everyone's time. hope ---------------------------------------- From: Newtanator@aol.com Date sent: Thu, 10 Sep 1998 16:05:16 EDT To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Final Ninja news - long Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Barb, My heart goes out to you. That is beautiful and I'm going to print it and put it up on my wall. I had a dream Wednesday morning that Ninja was literally fading away before my eyes - she was turning this pale orange, all the black was just seeping away. I know it was her time. I'm trying to take comfort in the fact that she's not in pain anymore, but I have this Ninja-sized hole in my chest that just aches for her. I know it will ease. A friend was with me for Ninja's passing and she and I were sharing Ninja stories with the vet. I spent a lot of time talking to Ninja and reminding both of us of all the wonderful things we shared in our 4 short years together. It also sounds like the two of you still have a strong connection, and that she is trying to tell you in her own way that she will always be with you, even if she is "fading away" physically from you, as you put it. My mom is taking them to visit Angela's vet tech who says she will adopt at least one! Isn't that great? I think that this will be a great weight off of my mother's mind. She says that all she does is hold kitten after kitten and wish that she had somewhere to go with them. Hopefully once one goes, the others will soon follow to new and happy homes. I have posted their pictures at: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Village/9606/thekittens.html so you can know who I'm talking about. Once geocities opens the Petsburgh neighborhood, this page will be moving, but there will be a re-direct message to the new page. I went home this past weekend to see them. Could be. Signs of heat include calling (the meow is lower and more frequent),becoming more affectionate by rubbing against their humans or inanimate objects and rolling. Sometimes you can also tell if you are experienced by the increased size of the vulva. > So right now I've got her in the > house, and have blocked the dog door (which is how everyone gets in and > out) and everyone is supposed to take care when going in and out to make > sure she doesn't slip out Good idea. :) > ( My question is..how > long is a cat in heat for? or is that another one of those it depends on > the cat things. The answer to you second question is yes. Each queen has her own normal cyclewhich, once established, tends to repeat itself. In answer to your first question, in general, heat signs may persist 9 to 10 days in the absence of breeding. > .how do I determine when to book her spaying before she > goes into heat again? Whenever you decide to stop the kittens from nursing, or whenever thequeen decides or the kittens stop nursing, you can schedule a spay. Most veterinarians have no problem spaying a cat in heat or pregnant. The cost may be slightly higher, but it presents no problem for the cat generally. Of course, you may want to check with your own personal vet on this. > (I've heard that once they start going into heat > and don't get pregnant they can go back into heat a few days later?) Again, generally, a queen will show signs of heat every 2 or 3 weeks unless bredor artifically stimulated to ovulate. Because of the individual variation of queens and the signs of heat can be missed, it is highly recommended that you keep her strictly indoors. Also, it can be dangerous to let her roam outside as she may bring in diseases to the kittens until they have been immunized. > --fuguee (and daria..wondering why she can't go outside and play with the > nice male kitty) Brenda..... ---------------------------------------- Date sent: Thu, 10 Sep 1998 22:00:18 -0500 From: "Brenda K.
