He eats like a horse. I had been getting worried, all I ever saw him doing was sleeping. But he eats, and he plays (I'm over paranoid with him I think) I just have to remember that he sleeps all day..he's a cat! On a side note..I have noticed that he's got gnarly breath, like our old lady cat does (and I always thought she had bad breath cause she caught and ate birds, and I think grey's been doing that too lately).. anyone have any ideas as to freshen him up? Would Tartar treats do the trick? --fuguee ---------------------------------------- From: GinaTex@aol.com Date sent: Wed, 2 Sep 1998 17:13:33 EDT To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Ninja Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Barb Yes They are certainly amazing creatures!!! That is good that your vet is open to non tradtional methods of treatment. And the holistic vet sure sounds promising, esp if she does house calls, that will elimanate the stress of the ride to the vets. And it would be really good if she can help get some weight on Ninja, I know that Rubin's hefty size certainly helped him out. We are sending healing vibes your way Take care! Her cat has had a tumor removed from her mouth. The cat's mouth is still red and inflamed (there are at least a few spots like this). Her kitty refuses to eat and she is afraid her kitty will starve to death because she refuses to eat. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to help this kitty and keep her from starving? Hurricaine Earl is bearing down on her and may be there already. I have not heard from her since she last posted to the list. Second, and of least importance of the two, I did a FAQ page on the Protease Inhibitors, based on the one I posted a few weeks ago. If that doesn't answer your questions, I will be glad to try and answer any you have. barb ---------------------------------------- From: "James G. If you have any suggestions for future FAQ's, please let me know. I want to add some Q&A about the dangers of clumping litter (Angela, no, I haven't forgotten the link to swheatscoop- I just wanted to get some info on it first). If anyone who has had good experiences with this product would like to contribute an article for the info page, I'd really appreciate it. I'd also be interested in any ideas we haven't covered there yet. Thanks to everyone for their invaluable contributions to the list and to our general understanding of this horrible disease. One thing your friend might ask the vet for is a drug called Periactin -- it is a very effective appetite stimulant. I would think that a combination of an analgesic & Periactin would help a lot. One other thing -- lack of eating is, in the short run, less of a problem than lack of hydration. The vet would probably also want to give fluids. Good luck. Actually, I am going to try to order some of that and I will let you know how it goes. Poncho has start to lick the sides of the litterbox and I am afraid she is going to start consuming clumping litter soon. Although her gums are a bit pinker and she is acting just fine, I am trying to prevent future problems. Unfortunately, the only PetsMart I know of is about 4 hours from here so I am going to see if I can't order some. Since it is not clay-based it shouldn't weigh so much and the shipping may not break my bank....I'll let y'all know what happens. (We have a vet appt. tomorrow at 9 for both Poncho and Jodi--I'll update then.) And our Florida friends and fur-babies are in our thoughts and prayers. Ninja has been very lovey the past couple days. It's quite a treat. My vet is very open to non-traditional options. She told me that she recognizes the limits of what she can offer us with traditional methods of treatment. We're maintaining her anti-seizure meds (prednisone and phenobarbital) and have upped the interferon to every day. She's also getting ambrotose and manna-cleanse every day. She had another bowel movement last night!! That's two normal BMs in 2 days:-). I love it! The problem area in her abdomen doesn't appear to be a distinct tumor; it looks like the tissues themselves are greatly enlarged/swollen. My vet is going to post to her vet's list and see what the oncologist may recommend in the way of oral chemotherapy. I figure, I'm already squirting stuff down her throat, another chemical shouldn't bother her too much. I have also been given the name of a holistic vet based in Milwaukee who visits Madison a couple times a week and does house calls. She does work with energies and acupressure as well as homeopathy. Apparently she works a lot with weight loss and that just isn't something Ninja needs help with, unfortunately. Ninja even tried to get away from the syringe this morning, and she hasn't' doesn't that in absolutely AGES. I think that's a good sign. She played a little last night and is quite alert, if a bit quiet. She's wanting lots of petting and is purring her little motor off:-) I'm trying to be realistic about this disease, but I feel better today. I tried her Rescue Remedy myself last night, and I slept really well! Of course, I woke up at 4 this morning. I'll keep y'all posted on our progress - keep the healing vibes coming, I believe they're helping!! Barb+Ninja ---------------------------------------- From: "James G. When Vyvyan was so ill and eating the litter, all I could do to stop it was to line his box with shredded newspaper- but, he wouldn't use it as often. So, I want to offer folks a better option to keep their cats from eating litter. First, and foremost, I want to address the real dangers of using clumping litter with FeLV+ cats. Then, I want to give the alternatives to clay litters- newspaper, Swheat scoop, etc. I think this is a problem that isn't generally discussed, so if any of you want to write up such a piece as I've outlined above with your personal experiences of the alternatives included, I'd appreciate the input. Take care, and thanks again to all for making these projects happen. In loving memory of Vyvyan: March 20, 1988 - August 15, 1997 James G. Barb+Ninja ---------------------------------------- From: "RDC" To: Subject: 'Gnarly' breath Date sent: Wed, 2 Sep 1998 23:27:53 +0200 Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Fuguee, what do you mean with 'gnarly'?? Bad breath might have several reasons - first of all bad teeth or tartar. That's something for the vet to look and care for. If the breath smells like urine, somewhat sweetly, it can mean problems with the kidneys, also a reason to run to a vet immediately. Just bad smell without any of these reasons could point to some chronical stomache-, bowel- or metabolic probs. In this case, you might try a combination of Nux Vomica and Carbo Vegetabilis (D6 both, C6 if not available), 5-7 pellets of each 3 times a day for a timeframe of two weeks. Just a suggestion, Rena (RDC) ---------------------------------------- From: "RDC" To: Subject: Re: Date sent: Thu, 3 Sep 1998 00:01:07 +0200 Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Katherine, is it gingivitis or an inflamation of the whole mouth that first began after the tumor was removed? Anything conspicous to be seen at the tongue, like a red edge or maybe the whole tongue being red and swolen? Is the mouth dry or does the cat drivel? As for feeding, your friend might try to give tiny balls of minced meat, carefully put in the side of the mouth. If this hurts too much, just some liquid food, like a mixture of NutriCal with Sheba-Sauce in a syringe with no needle, carefully put in the side of the mouth. A good mixer gets everything liquid, and some nutrient paste or instant concentration powder put in helps the cat to get what it needs most. Boviserin would be very good, but I'm not sure anymore if you get it over there.. (by the way, Barb, it is from the Hoechst Company. Almost as big as Bayer..)
