"Mince" is minced beef. Diet mince seems to be minced beef with no fat in it at all if this is possible. You get different kinds of minced beef with varying levels of fat - Titch refuses point blank to eat anything except the Absolutely No Fat variety. Go figure? Cats know what's best, I guess!! I reckon it is as important as the medication - without it I am sure Titch would not have recovered as well as he has. I am trying to prepare a protocol for distribution to all the vets in South Africa (the lack of a telephone line this past 3 weeks was a real impediment, as you can imagine!!) so that we can convince the distributors of Interferon to pack in smaller quantities. It is so expensive that the vet wont buy it unless you agree to pay for the whole bag! I have to add that most vets think you are crazy to be even wanting to try to save a FeLV+ cat but of course if we can offer them a way of making extra money, they will probably go for it. Sorry to be bad mouthing vets and I am generalising. There are some caring vets (thank goodness, Kitten Action has some incredible vets that we use) but even the caring ones think euthenase is the best option for a FeLV+ cat. It is our task to change their minds. I will pass on your suggestion to Steve. It is SO hard to know what to do. The last thing he wants is to discontinue the med and then find Titch going down hill again. Boy I hate this disease! If he starts to lose his appetite again try using one tsp 2 times daily of dried alfalfa for Titch. It works as an appetite stimulant. I think I am going to start adding just a little bit to my cats' wet food everyday to keep their appetites up. I can always stop if they get too tubby! Linda P ---------------------------------------- From: "Mandy Crerar" To: Subject: Re: Catching up Date sent: Tue, 1 Sep 1998 06:05:21 +0200 Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Thanks for your suggestions Beth. It is SO hard to know what to do - the last thing Steve wants is to stop the med and then find Titch going downhill and have to play the catchup game again. We are trying to find out about the availability of Immunoregulin in this country - often these drugs are registered under a different name. The vets think we are quite made to be even trying to save a FeLV+ cat which makes the task even more difficult! Steve's vet is a VERY caring lady who is keen to help. Steve is going to have to arrange for her to come to the house to do the blood test because Titch gets so stressed in the car even for a few minutes, he almost faints from terror, literally, it is dreadful to see. So car travel is OUT. I agree he should test again and then maybe switch to to supplements to keep his immune system in top gear. Thanks for your caring advice. Will keep you posted. I have been using it for all of my cats, and Barb has had success using it for Ninja. Let me know if you are interested. What at wonderful way both to pay respects to the dear ones who have passed...as well as to the wonderful people who have been with them to the end. I have never before encountered such a wonderful group of unselfish individuals as here on this list - I don't know how many of you do it, but by giving these cats such a worthy end has to be one of the most loving, unselfish deeds there is. I myself am just a breeder - I don't honestly know if I could do the work that many of you do. My conclusion is that you must have lot's of "heart room" - I consider myself honored to be on this list with you. I admire you for making this effort. I've found it difficult to convince doctors (human or otherwise) of anything! (No bashing, just reality, although some are more "open" than others). Besides the 7 days on, 7 days off protocol for the 30 units/ml of Interferon, there is an "every third day" protocol for cats that become depressed on the other protocol. We are currently looking into the feline interferon situation. I was in contact with a young man in Japan that was using it, but I lost contact with him in the great computer crash last month. Hopefully, I'll have re-established my contacts soon so that we can get some data (and, hopefully, the interferon) to y'all soon. Yes, Lee Bio. was very rude, and I'm now considering removing them from our site since they don't work well with the public. Any thoughts on this? Take care, and best wishes to all. Ninja's been pretty quiet and off her feed the last week or so most noticeably and I was going to take her in on the 12th to re-test her FeLV status since she's only been tested once. A couple weeks ago, when we were having all that great cuddle time and marathon belly rubs, I thought I could feel something different in her abdomen. Now, I usually just rub her tummy and don't do those nasty abdominal probes. She had a slight fever late last week and I just wanted to get her in fast. Oh, the Bach's worked really well for her:-). She was very mellow in the car and at the vet - except for the abdominal probing, damn can she growl! Pretty good sign really, even through the rescue remedy! Anyway, her ascending large intestine is extremely thickened and part of it even looks calcified in the x-ray. Her report says that the mass involves the cecum and proximal small intestine. She's also down to 7 pounds 7 ounces. I am waiting for the vet to call back with the cytology report. We also did a CBC. Didn't bother with the FeLV test; doesn't seem to matter now. I can't afford chemo and I think that would be too stressful for her anyway. We talked a bit about her options but for now, we've gone to every day with the interferon and are keeping up her anti-seizure meds. My lovely little Ninja has had her best years with me and has had three extra months so far. Tears keep filling my eyes, but I haven't sat down and bawled yet. I think I must be waiting for after the vet call. One of my co-workers said that if I started to cry, he'd be joining me! I DO know that I will do what I can to keep her comfortable until she lets me know it's time. We had some nice lovin' this morning and I'll be spending as much quality time with her as I can. Shouldn't be too hard, I couldn't sleep last night and was up at 5 this morning. I left my little rumble-bunny sleeping on her folded up bedspread looking absolutely adorable. I'll post later after I talk to the vet about the cytology report. The problem area is her ascending large intestine and you could clearly see stool in her descending large intestine and she pooped last night. I am praying and waiting for the vet to call. I will definitely be collecting all the vibes coming this way....... Ah HAH! "Ground Beef"! aka "Hamburger"! All I could envision was minced-pie mix - the sweet apple based filling that has suet in it - and was envisioning one made with Nutra-Sweet or something! Yes - there are several grades - I can't recall them all right now, but they are rated with the percentage of fat content. Since the e-coli scare(s) around here, I don't buy pre-ground meat - I buy a roast, wash and then sear the outside to kill off any bacteria, and then cut it up myself... Mine aren't that picky about the fat content - in fact, Teo and Stormy would probably prefer it if I left the fat at a high level - but for their sakes I remove the fat before giving it to them! Date sent: Tue, 1 Sep 1998 21:27:40 +0200 Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Diana, Thanks for helping to clear this up!! The stuff that we South Africans call "mince" is actually what Americans call "ground beef". Is this the language barrier or what!!!!!! Steve is a strict vegan so for him to have to buy any kind of dead animal to feed to Titch was pretty gross - he tried raw and cooked liver, raw and cooked fish, raw and cooked chicken, raw and cooked turkey, etc etc ad nauseum. Such is his relationship with Titch that, vegan or no vegan, if Titch wants raw diet beef mince (i.e. ground beef) raw diet mince is what he gets! Yukkk but he is doing so well on it. Nature made them carnivores. They have no choice in the matter. They must have some meat to live. I'm glad your friend recognized this. Titch is thanking him too by doing so well on it. What may be Yukkk to us is Yummm to a cat! Ok everybody, throw your hats at me, go ahead. I'm going back to lurking now.
