My vet said that the first FeLv shot is at 12 weeks of age followed by a booster 2-3 weeks latter. That is when our kittens had theirs, then we had to wait another 2-3 weeks before they where brought into the FeLv + household. After that one year latter they get another FeLv shot once a year. Schmall" To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: FIV Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Nancy @ Clumberluv, You can extend this cat's life if you are willing to (most likely). I have an FIV cat who was very ill last October. Jake is on Interferon, Immunoregulin, and a small dose of prednisone--also vitamins and a nutritional diet. He is doing extremely well. FIV is feline aids; it means the immune system is greatly suppressed. It sounds like your cat may have a respiratory virus or possibly a little asthma. If she was my cat, I would take her to a vet who uses the new treatments (interferon, etc.--see our net pages below) and get her examined for a respiratory infection. I would start treatment immediately. The fact that you took in the cat to begin with means you are a kind person and the fact that you wrote to this list for help means you are willing to try to give some quality to her life. Expenses for medicines are on a continuum--you must stop when you feel you cannot afford what someone else might or you must stop when for whatever reasons you feel you cannot go further. Interferon is *very* cheap and it could help immensely. Antibiotics for a viral infection are relatively cheap and so are most vitamins. Most of us also use a liquid iron supplement for these cats called Pet-tinnic. It is excellent and will help your cat with any anemia or weakness she may have. DMG, another very cheap product can help too. I think it is just a matter of time, but at least I can give her > some love untill that time comes. > > 1. How will I know that the disease is taking its toll? FIV is the least innocuous of immune system diseases, i.e. FELV and FIP. If you can stimulate the immune system and protect the cat from viruses, etc. (in other words, keep her indoors), many of these cats have lived several years. It really depends on how bad a state her body is in, luck, and how much you are willing to do for her. (I think this answers question #2 as well.) Incidentally, from what I've read about FIV, the basic way of transmission is bites and scratches. Jake has had FIV for several years; he has been with our other 5 cats for several years and has not passed on the disease to anyone else. > 2. How long will she have? > She has lost 3-4 teeth already and sneezes a lot. When she purrs she looses > her breath and chokes a little. I know its not that long. Again, she needs to be checked for URI--upper respiratory virus, very common in immune suppressed cats. > 3. What kind of special care should she recieve? > See above. Nancy, any questions you have can be addressed to this list or me personally. I have a lot of information since I have had two FIV cats and would be willing to share anything you need to know with you. Also, please look at our pages: http://www.geocities.com/HotSprings/Spa/8025/felvfaq.htm (*very* important information here!!) http://www.angelfire.com/il/felv/ for treatments . . . and Good luck; hope to be hearing from you soon. I called the humane society today to volunteer. Jack was back and they were looking for a home for him. No one wants him. He's deaf and a virus caused some eye cloudiness although he can see. He cries so loud the last lady who adopted him got in trouble at the apartments where she lived. Right now he's upstairs in the spare bedroom. He is crying some but not as bad as he was at the humae society. The little one's name is Roku. It means six in Japanese. She was the sixth. She stays upstairs in the spare bedroom during the day, but is allowed to play in the living room in the evening. She has to get her first FeLV shot. What's the minimum age for that? The vet says she's about 7-8 weeks. HB doesn't mess with her at all. My cat, Samson, is positive with FELv. He's done fine for the past few years but recently it appears to be taking its toll. He has gotten very thin and I'm looking for any suggestions to improve his appetite, and or increase his weight. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I too have a multi-cat household, with two testing positive for FELV. I desperately need help re info on ImmunoRegulin and to find a vet in the atlanta area who will use it. Most of the vets I go to say put them to sleep and don't really seem to care. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated. I know the symptoms well. As to the little one. 12 wks or 3 lbs is what my vet requires. He says any younger and they might not take because they are to immature. He says the immunity they get from Mom could interfer any younger. Jack will settle down. He is prob so confused right now. And some just talk more than others. He'll be ok in time, when he is more sure he is finally home. barb ---------------------------------------- From: Newtanator@aol.com Date sent: Sat, 29 Aug 1998 22:16:29 EDT To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Jake Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Is there such a thing as liquid ambrotose? I wondered why we didn't see you here before this as I talked to you some time ago. Anyway, my Rusty has Irritible Bowel Disease and was vomiting and not eating. Initially, steroid shots were helping, but lately, with the help of my vet, we have put him on Pepcid AC, which has helped tremendously with the vomiting and Periactin which is an appetite stimulant that someone on the list had suggeseted for felv+ kitties who didn't want to eat. Within a few minutes of giving him his first 1/2 tablet of the Periactin, he was lying down right by the bowl, begging for more to eat and he's been eating big time and gaining weight. It's amazing. I would highly recommend you get some from your vet. I'm sure a lot of the other folks will have suggestions for you too. Good luck and let us know how Samson is doing!!! Pet-Tinic is a liquid with B vitamins (stimulates appetite) and iron (good if they're anemic) that maybe helpful. A short term solution (he needs to recover and eat on his own to survive) is to give him something he really likes, but normally doesn't get. Food that is really smelly and room temp. or a little warmer often tempts cats to eat. You could try canned fish or meat baby foods, but be sure the baby food has no onion powder in it because onion is toxic to cats and causes anemia by damaging red blood cells. Also encourage him to drink water. Has Samson had symptoms before, and how old is he? The drugs on the treatments page www.angelfire.com/il/felv may help, and check out the information sheet from there for more important info. She plays on the sofa and floor, but HB doesn't bother her. They don't have any contact. I've got screens over the child gates so I can leave that door open and Missy can see the others during the day when I'm not here. I'm not worried about Jack. He is older and has some shots. I'll give him a booster Tuesday when I take HB in for his immunoregulin. Ginseng and Royal Bee Jelly also works well to stimulate appetite and increase energy in felv+s. Allen M. Schoen, DVM, author of _Love, Miracles, and Animal Healing_, suggests 6 drops 3x a day. I give my felv+ cat George approx. 1/4 tsp. 2x a day. (He's now eating about a cup of wet food a day--actually more than he should, but I'm not complaining!) You buy Ginseng and Royal Bee Jelly at the health food store. The kind I buy looks and tastes like honey. Good luck with Samson. I love the name!
