If we hadn't gone to the vet then, I would have known something was wrong for sure, in part because of this. She's on Baytril (chewable - it's a new thing, and I'll let you know how it works. It smells terrible and we still have to pill her with it, or we can crush it and mix it with something) as well as Doxycycline to get rid of the Hemobart. For instance, my kitty Ágata loves to lick the plastic grocery bags that I bring home. She goes only for the ones that come from one certain store. I was totally flummoxed by this and thought it meant she was either 1) batty or 2) sick in some way I couldn't figure out. Other than that, she was fine and healthy looking. Well, come to find out that these plastic bags are sprayed with something containing fish oil to keep them from sticking together and completely drying out. Go figure! She still loves to lick those bags, and I have a constant struggle to keep them far away from her. About the grass thing, I too have heard that kitties like to eat grass to satisfy some nutritional need that isn't being met. My Bello will, if he is allowed to go out, immediately run to a spot where he can chew on some blades of grass. He munches happily for about 5 minutes, then runs back, satisfied. I would think Barley Cat would be a good substitute for the usual grasses that are found outside, no? I didn't know that about the clumping litter and am very glad I don't use that, as I have always wondered if it's a bad idea to use it with kitties who are ill. Frankly, my cats won't use it at all, and now we use one pan with Tidy Cat Multiple Cat (non-clumping) and one pan with Feline Pine. They like both really well, and they don't seem to track litter or pine dust anywhere. By the way, someone was talking about a kitty who was peeing everywhere. I just wanted to raise the possibility that the kitty was/is having urinary tract problems that can be helped homeopathically. I think I've heard that shave grass (in an infusion) is really helpful for kitties who don't have severe problems but who have chronic ones and are nonetheless consistently peeing outside the litter box (please see Pitcairn, p. 242). We've done complete blood work and sterile urine samples and the whole deal and physically, her plumbing is just fine. I spoke with my vet about it quite a bit. I think I may just pick up Pitcairn's book since so many people here have found it a good source. Thanks for the suggestions!! Thank goodness Ágata doesn't eat any part of the bag! She only seems interested in licking the fish oil stuff off it, and quickly loses interest after a couple of minutes anyway. I imagine that eating the bags (which are, in essence, petroleum products, if I'm not mistaken?) could be bad both in terms of how the cat's body processes them (I'd imagine they are next to impossible for the body to fully process through) and in how toxic they are because of what they are made of. Thanks for the word of caution. I'll make sure my kitty doesn't switch in mid stream and start eating the darned things! MY VET just found out that one of his very own cats is FIV positive! He's trying to find a good home for him - preferably with another FIV positive kitty! He's a 5 yr. old neutered male and up to date on all his shots. He's solid grey short-haired and VERY VERY VERY affectionate he said and VERY playful. My vet is in Maryland if anyone is interested - about 45 minutes from Washington, D.C. You can email me directly and I can then either pass the info on to my vet or I can then give you my vet's email address directly. One of my friends here in San Diego got the same info about vaccinating right away, so I will check with my vet tomorrow and see what he thinks, if he says no, I will go elsewhere to get them, as far as the rest of the meds, I guess I need to look further into the info sheet to find out dosages? I really appreciate the support, and wish you the best with your five. kit ---------------------------------------- Date sent: Wed, 26 Aug 1998 21:30:39 -0700 From: Kit Kennedy To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: stray kits in GA.
