But, it is not the same as cats that eat grass. It is my understanding that cats occasionally need "greens" in their diets. Perhaps, someone with more experience in that area can provide more info on this. Since we are talking about anemic cats eating inert materials to compensate for mineral depletion, I want to warn folks about the use of "clumping" litter with your FeLV+ cat. It has been reported (though, I can't find the report at the moment) that some cats have died from eating the clumping variety of litter- it gets trapped in their digestive tracts and they can't regurgitate it. So, please check that you are not using this type of litter for your FeLV+ cats. I hope this helps. Take care, and best wishes. In loving memory of Vyvyan: March 20, 1988 - August 15, 1997 James G. Unfortunately, Ninja was paid for it. She normally gets her medicine around 7 in the morning and 6 in the evening. Last Sunday, I was up around 7 to go to the bathroom, but I went back to bed and didn't wake up until around noon - which is very odd considering I didn't go out Saturday night. So Ninja got her meds at noon and then around 7 that night. Well, she was pretty quiet that day and that evening, she wasn't interested in her tuna treat. At all. Talk about odd. When I woke up Monday morning, she had peed on the bed twice and was laying on one of the spots. Definitely not normal behavior. And she was still really quiet and indifferent to tuna Monday night. She's been getting her medicine on schedule since Sunday night and she's back on track now, but what a way to find out! Chemicals are truly amazing substances. They have given her quality of life. I believe that if I hadn't started treating her (or if she were still with my psycho-ex) that she would be gone by now. This past weekend really made me realize yet again just how dependent she is upon me. I'll have to be even more careful in choosing a care taker if I want to go out of town for a weekend. (not that I've been at all careless, Ninja is the love of my life:-)) If I don't have someone who can stay at my place and give her her medicines, I won't be able to leave. I don't really travel much, so I'm not feeling the restriction, but it feels odd anyway. Ninja does great while she's on her medicine and has been doing really well on the higher phenobarb/lower pred dosages. She hasn't had a seizure for - WOW it's been 7 weeks!!!! I had to look it up on my calendar! That's awesome:-) I'll talk to the vet about adjusting the dosages again when I take Ninja in on the 12th to get re-tested. She's only been tested once (ELISA) at the end of April. My second vet did that. Thankfully, with my current vet, I'll be able to discuss the results and also which test to do, or both. Although her leukemia status isn't her biggest problem. Whatever is causing her seizures and behavior changes (the peeing everywhere) is the bane of our lives. BUT, we had nice lovey time this morning in the sunshine:-) I'll keep you posted...... And I have another cat ( Sophia ) that licks your legs dry when you get out of the shower and she will lick all around the tub, and when she gets fresh water she licks the rim dry. She has done that since she was a kitten. Our Rubin whom was very anemic I did not notice any eating of strange things. He refused to eat period. He wasn't eating as well last night or this morning. The vet said he had distemper and was devloping pneumonia. He died while she was trying to stablize him. The others are doing fine. They've all been vaccinated. He was only here three days but he had a piece of my heart already. We believe that she has a meningioma - a type of brain tumor - but as I don't have $600 lying around for an MRI, we don't know for sure. Of course, if we did find a meningioma with the MRI, I would need another $1000 to start with for surgery. Why does money have to be such a big factor in health care? (this is a rhetorical question, don't worry!) We HAVE ruled things out. Toxoplasmosis could have accounted for ALL of her symptoms, from her dilated pupils to her seizures to the behavioral changes, but she's negative. :-( I used to work in a consultant pharmacy, so I knew that timing of medication for seizure disorders was very important, but this is the first time I've seen it with my own eyes. I definitely won't make that mistake again. I will keep everyone posted, for sure. Here's hoping she continues to improve--7 weeks is greaaat! She used to lick the tub after a shower for the water when she was little - now she does it after the water has dried and just licks the porcelain. She had stopped licking the concrete and the litter before once her pcv went up, so even if she hadn't tested low on her pcv, I would have known. Does anybody else's cat do this as well? I'm sure it's the mineral deficiency/anemia thing again. She is still hanging in there - hiding a little, but not too much. And still purrs and shows interest in things. Will update with more info as we progress, one way or another. Well, I bought some medicinal stuff to try, Rissa-Tai had it once and liked it but my vet freaked. It can cause the same kind of blockages, so please beware of this. Also, if you like the clumping litter, several of us have switched to Swheat Scoop. It's a clumping litter made out of wheat and won't hurt them. Personally, I think it works better anyway. You can find it at Petsmart, and it's not too expensive either. They could not get him to stop, and said they never realized how many plastic bags we use and what we use them for. Anyway, once she separated from her husband, he wasn't as careful about keeping them away from the cat, who eventually got huge and wasn't even able to groom himself. He eventually died, couldn't breathe - and only nine years old. We think he probably choked or that the bags were causing a blockage somewhere. If anyone else is having this problem, please be careful! Pam ---------------------------------------- END
