Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Hi - I echo the question about supplements to help the babies fight off the virus. I have an 11 week old, Bandit, whose ELISA and IFA both came back positive last week. Does anyone know if there is any possibility that he could still fight it off, or does that usually occur in the first month or two after birth? I guess I am asking if I should retest him again in a month, or just start working to accept that he is positive? I have two other cats, BOuncer, 12 weeks, and Boots, 6 years. I did not know about this nasty disease and brought Bandit and Bouncer home before I had them tested. Boots was tested last month, negative, and BOuncer tested negative at the same time Bandit tested positive. So I must wait another 5 weeks to retest them. And Bandit, too, if it is possible that he could have fought it off. My heart is with those of you who sent your babies to the Rainbow Bridge this weekend. I sent my Buddy there on July 4, he was in liver failure, possibly congenital, we don't know. But, I do know how painful it is to say goodbye, even knowing that it is the biggest and most unconditional act of love you can give your baby. kit ---------------------------------------- From: "James G. Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Hi Kit, Yes, you should have both Bouncer and Bandit retested in a month. Since Boots is 6 yrs. old and negative, chances are that he is immune to it. At 11 and 12 weeks, it may be just too early to tell for sure. Since Bouncer fought it off (or is naturally immune), maybe Bandit will as well. In the meantime, you should supplement their diets with DMG (Dimethylglycine- get it from the health food store). You may also want to start Bandit on a regimen of Interferon to help him fight off the FeLV. Giving it every third day seems to work best for most folks (write to me privately if you need more info). You may also want to start weekly injections of Immunoregulin to help boost his immune system. You can find more info on all of this at: http://www.angelfire.com/il/felv/ and http://www.geocities.com/HotSprings/Spa/8025/ Please let us know if we can help you further in getting these precious furries the help they need to beat this awful disease. Take care, and best wishes. In loving memory of Vyvyan: March 20, 1988 - August 15, 1997 James G. That's when we switched to DepoMedrol, an injectable steroid, which she has been getting every three weeks. She just got an injection on Friday, and she is going back September 4 and she'll get it again then. Trust me, with this cat, it's much easier to do it this way than getting another pill in her! And, it does the same thing as the Pred. At least now you know what has worked. I'll be lighting a candle for your gal and sending healing vibes. I have a kitty difficult to pill, too. Frankie (six lb wonder) takes two full-grown adults, a towel, and a pill gun to get anything down her throat! Roger sits on the couch and we put Frankie in a big towel in between his legs. We wrap the towel snuggly around Frankie's neck and then I gently press on each side of her jaw to get her mouth open. I aim for the middle--the little dangly thingy in the back of the mouth. This has worked fairly well (just got it last Thurs.), and I could kick myself for not getting a pill gun before. Also, have you heard of cat sacks? They look a little like kitty straight jackets :-(. I don't really like them just because of that, but my vet tells me that once kitties realize there's no use fighting, many calm down and take their medicine much better. (The cat's head is exposed and there are zippers to expose a front or back leg for injections, blood tests, even for nail clips.) Congrats on your new non-furry baby! She's still in the same position she was in yesterday but her hard labored breathing has calmed down alot. I am going to try to feed her some liquid food later today. Maybe that will help her regain her strength. I'll keep you posted. On a funny but sad note: I bought myself a fish the other day (a siamese fighting fish). Well anyway, yesterday while I was at work my husband, Jim decided to do me a favor and change it's water. WELL...he forgot to put stress coat in the water (it gets rid of the clorine in the water, which fish can't breathe) so when I got home from work I found my fish floating in his bowl. As if I wasn't depressed enough. My husband feels horrible about this but he didn't know any better, he thought he was doing me a favor so I guess I'll forgive him.
