Monday August 24, 1998 Part 1 20 Messages ======================================== From: WORKPARK@aol.com Date sent: Mon, 24 Aug 1998 03:18:49 EDT To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Latest on Rissa-Tai Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Jim, That's my feeling. I'm very hopeful that we can do just that since she is in better shape to start with at this point. I talked with the vet about that as well. There is a new form of Baytrill which is chewable that she prescribed for Rissa-Tai. If we are unable to pill her well with that, we can crush it and mix it with something (probably cool whip, it's non-dairy and she likes it very much) or even with water, maybe even the Interferon when she gets that. The other option that she mentioned is that there are a few pharmacists in town that can make liquid solutions of pills, so we might try that as well. Like I said, we're being hopeful that she can pull a miracle out of here again somewhere. Thanks for responding so quickly. We may just end up trying it this time, though. She's really sneaky however. She has walked away, we're convinced she swallowed the pill(s) and then she goes PUH and out it comes. She even did this at the vet's once, and PUH'ed out the first pill after they gave her the second! Then she did the second one. They said they never saw any cat quite as sneaky/clever. Guess we're lucky! And thank you, we're excited about the new "non-furry" baby coming in the beginning of March as well. I think we have a much better chance, as we caught this before her cbc got really low and she does weigh much more than before. Where would I find such a wonderful thing? My Smokina has become quite adept at hiding the pill in her mouth (even when I'm sure it went straight down her gullet) them spitting it out when I put her down again. She even does the 'nose lick' thingy with the pill still in there! The pillgun sounds like what I need. It basically holds the pill until you can get it aimed at the back of their tongue and then release it. There are other kinds too, one has an accordian like design that flushes the pill down with water. Seems like the cat would gag. They're in some catalogs I get, so they're probably in pet stores. Maybe your vet sells them too. What about putting here on a small dose of Prednisone to help keep off the pesky destruction of cells? You may be opposed to steriods--please forgive me if you are (it's hard to keep so many people and cats straight sometime). Pilling my Jake is very difficult, but I do it and follow it up with a reward of some of his favorite food. That way *hopefully* he'll connect the pilling to something good. You and Rissa are in my thoughts. Hang in there (and baby too!). Nancy ---------------------------------------- Date sent: Mon, 24 Aug 1998 14:10:30 -0500 (CDT) From: "Nancy A. Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Hello there everyone, Last week was a very informative week for me. I have come to the conclusion from much advice from everyone on the list that I will keep these now approx. 11or 12 week old sister kittens for a couple more weeks unitl I can get them retested in hopes that the next tests will be negative. If negative I will keep these girls to join my other happy kids; however, in the event of another positive outcome, I must still search for a good home for these two(anyone who may be interested, please contact me, as I do not want to wait to the last minutes;especially if I may have to drive and get off work. ) so far no luck in the Atlanta area :-( and putting them to rest w/ animal control is not my preferred option unless I run out of alternatives. ***Does anyone have any advice on anything I can do to possibly help the second tests come back negative?? I read somewhere that putting some echinecea/golden seal drops in their food couldn't hurt? Any thoughts or other ideas??. Any of these horrible diseases can leave several cats a victim in their wake, and it is a brutal, silent killer. I know well how devastating these losses can be. Here in Phoenix, Arizona USA, July was the worse month I have ever experienced in my life. I have been through some major ordeals in my life, but nothing worse than losing so many kittens to feline distemper (Panleukapenia). In the 3 1/2 years I've been doing cat rescue, I've never encountered anything like it, and to say it was much like a plague is no understatement. Quite a few shelters and rescue groups here in the Phoenix area experienced losses due to feline distemper, but that was little comfort when the precious little kittens you know and love and care for die. Distemper struck mainly kittens under 12 weeks old, those that had or had not been vaccinated. One 2 year old (the exception) and one very skinny 3 year old were also victims to this terrible virus. I quarrantined all of our cats for 6 weeks from the time we took in our last cats and kittens, a full 4 weeks from the last loss we incurred due to distemper, before beginning adoptions again. I wanted to be sure no kitten was still incubating distemper and that no one could still be harboring it that was not showing illness. We actually waited 7 weeks and started back to adoptions this past weekend. One change (among many) we have made is to now give modified live 4in1 shots, as opposed to the killed virus versions. While many opinions are out there, several web sites and rescue people and vets I consulted felt that modified live was better protection to kittens (or cats that have never been vaccinated) against distemper. All of the kittens we lost that had had their shots had the killed virus version, and I cannot know at this point whether modified live would have saved some of them, but I feel strongly enough that this modified live 4in1 (or modified live 3in1) is how I will proceed. The overwhelming sadness of July will haunt me forever. Losing cats and kittens is an inevitable part of doing large-scale rescue, but I am not personally thick-skinned enough to not be effected profoundly. I understand your loss. Only time can help us get beyond these things, and our understanding that we keep going despite the overwhelming sadness fate decides to hand out to the animals we love.
