Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net I am in Willow Wood, Ohio...very near Ironton in the southern-most part of the state. I have worked with a vet near here who has 4 positive kittens herself (well, the vet-tech is the one who has them, but they have had some that resided in the clinic while they found homes)...I have to go there this week anyway to get more interferon for one of my kitties....PLEASE let me see what I can find out. I may be able to help place them.....I just need a little bit of time to see what I can come up with. Please write to me if I can help answer any other questions--you will be so glad you found this list--ALL OF US ARE!!!!!!! Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Hi Putting these babies to sleep IS NOT THE ANSWER. First I would have them retested to make sure it was not a false postive. Having FeLv is not an instant death sentence, I have a cat who is 4 1/2 now, Sophia, she tested positve at 6 months of age and to this day has never been ill. And on Memorial Day I lost my 12 year old (Rubin) to FeLv, he was positive since he was 5 years old. At that time our old vet said he must be euthanized because he would just die anyways soon. Well we found another vet who was willing to treat and we had 7 more wonderful glorius years with him. This list is full of people who can help, give them time to see what they can come up with. I do not know about sending by mail, as the liquid I got needs cooling, I meant, maybe this one IS available for purchase in USA, maybe you could ask one of your nicer vets??? Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Hope - a few things to consider. First - a lot of kittens do test positive initially, and then test negative later - either due to a false positive, or because they have been exposed and have fought the virus off. So - before doing *anything*, wait at least a week (preferably longer - with Amelia we only waited a week, but that was 5 years ago. I'd now wait at least a month), and re-test. Second - even if they are positive, there are homes with currently FeLV+ cats who may be looking for a companion cat. April, 1997 - I was in that situation. Ghost, aged about 21, had lost her granddaughter/companion due to complications, and was dreadfully lonely. I found a perfect companion for her from a group of kittens born a year earlier, that our local group had opted to keep alive. Third - Princess is now 2-1/2, and as far as I know still quite healthy (when Ghost died this year, I found a new situation for her as companion cat...8-) ). A couple of other cats who were diagnosed as kittens are still doing well, one is 7 or 8 years old now. That said - those are the plus-column side of the ledger. There are some minus-column entries. Understand - these minuses are *only* applicable if the kittens are truly positive. Most kittens who are really positive do not live very long. Males seem to succumb faster than females. Princess is the last of a litter of 4. Her first brother died before he was 6 months old. I had been going to take her and her other brother - but he succumbed right after I agreed to take them, without even coming to live with me. Her sister succumbed to lymphoma in May - which is how she got her new situation. I'm hoping that Princess will be the exception, and live a long life, but the odds are definitely against it. (Ghost was probably 7 or 8 when she was exposed.) If you live in an area where there are no FeLV+'s looking for companion cats, and where older cats are euthanized in kitten season - it's probably going to save a lot of other cats' lives if these kittens are euthanized. You will have to find a home where they can stay together - or if adopted out individually, to homes where they will be the only cats. While, given the same situation, I would still not have hesitated to bring Ghost and Ishtar in 3 years ago - there's no question that in doing so I exposed the rest of my cats to this disease. I'm hoping my precautions kept the others from getting exposed - but I won't know for another 6 months or more. Finding a home where someone is willing to make the commitment to giving them the medical care they may require could be difficult. There are a lot of folks who have cats because they are cats, and we're crazy about cats. But a lot of folks have cats because they are "low maintenance". Sad, frustrating, but true. And, if you can't place them, then they will have to stay with their foster family - thus taking one foster family off the list of available homes. There's probably a shortage of foster homes in your area as there is where I live. Princess' litter meant that that home had to keep them until all were adopted - thus taking her out as a foster home for over a year. Usually a foster home keeps kittens for only 2-3 months, and can cycle through several sets in a season. (I know - all unadoptable kittens tend to stay with their foster home - but if the kittens are negative - other kittens can be brought in to the home still, if the home can handle it.) V Animal Products. Do you have a friend who can translate legalize? :) Years ago my parents imported a MS drug that wasn't FDA approved for my uncle. They needed proof it would be administered by a doctor and there was some other red tape and that drug wasn't temperature sensitive. Maybe it's similar legally for an animal drug, but keeping the Duphamun-Baypamun the right temp. would be a concern too. I had a feeling this week that things may be a little different, as she seemed slightly more tired and more passive when I gave her her Pet-tinic and DMG. Well, we went again on Friday, and discovered she had lost two ounces (down to 8 lbs. 12 oz.). The vet had said not to worry about it, that it was probably only that she had urinated before we took her in, and that her blood still looked good. However, I got a call from the other vet yesterday about her blood results. I was right about something being different. Three weeks ago, her pcv was 46%, it is now half that, at 23%. Her wbc had been over 9000, it is now 3800, and her lymphocytes have dropped as well. Lastly, the Hemobart is back. This nasty parasite, even if you "get rid of it" will stay and hide in their system until they get run down. Last week I went out of town for five days. We think this may have depressed her and that is why it emerged again. We are very hopeful that we will be able to pull her out of this once again. She weighs between 2 and 3 pounds more than she did last time, and her pcv is twice what it was then. We are also putting her back on the double dose of Doxycycline and Baytrill, gonna whop her with everything immediately instead of trying the other stuff first. And we are going back to seeing the vet every two weeks instead of every three. She is still very alert, purry, and social, just a little more tired. She is still being bratty, which gives us the most hope. On top of all this, we have just started looking to buy a house with a realtor, and plan to move (still in Tucson) at the end of November. Never mind which that we are now about 11 weeks pregnant with our first non-furry baby! So, I haven't been feeling too great myself, which may also have affected her. However, we are going to try everything once again for her, and know that you all will be sending out good wishes. Lastly, if anybody has any good ideas on pilling - she absolutely hates it! It has been wonderful the last couple of months not having to force pills down her throat. With these antibiotics, we can't even hide them in dairy products, so any ideas to help this along will be much appreciated. Pam ---------------------------------------- From: "James G. Get that under control and I'm sure she'll be right back up there in those numbers that are impressing the vets (and us all) so much. About the pilling, can't the vet give you the antibiotics in liquid form? It'd still be a chore getting the meds in her, but you might be more successful. Take care, and know that our thoughts and best wishes are with you, Rissa-Tai, Chuck, and the new non-furry. Talk to you soon. In loving memory of Vyvyan: March 20, 1988 - August 15, 1997 James G. There is nothing more heartwrenching as to watch a kitty that you dearly love go through the motions of his final breath. I have held many a kitty that way and I just can't describe the horror. To have a vet "put your kitty to sleep", to me is a great blessing. They just drift off to a very peaceful sleep and your heart is lifted at the same time it is breaking. But to see them go so peacefully, I wouldn't ever want it any other way. So, what I'm trying to say, is don't wait too long to where Tut will suffer greatly his last breaths of life. Hopefully getting rid of the hemobart "again" will get Rissa-Tai feeling energetic again. JACKSON is still doing well even though he has the chronic nasal infection, but when he sneezed a couple days ago it looked like there was some blood. So he's on Baytril for 2 weeks as a precaution and to control the infection as much as possible. And he's getting an Ireg. booster in 2 weeks instead of 4 this time. My vet actually suggested this, I think JACKSON is convincing him treatments can really help. I've had good success using a pill gun to pill my cats. I open their mouths and pop the pill down their throat. They don't even know they took anything, they just look at me like "why'd you stick that plastic thing in my mouth". I've missed occasionally, but it usually works well.
