As a former practicing Veterinary Technician and owner of 7 cats, I can tell you with experience that Clavamox is not tolerated well by many cats. Every cat I have that has tried it ends up vomiting after a couple of days of Clavamox. Btw....it also seems to affect many dogs in the same way. Now whenever my vet starts for the Clavamox, I say no and she substitutes it with Baytril. :) You also might find this interesting. They now have a chewable Baytril tablet for cats. Sounds interesting. Recently I have found 2 stray black and white sisters(approx. 10 wks old) who when I brought them to the vet last week they tested positive for FeLV. They are short to medium haired, white boots, one has a mustache that is half white and half black and the other has a white north star on her nose. They have been given their distemper shots, and I have put frontline on them to rid them of their fleas and protect them from getting any others. All fleas are gone a this point. Together they are just too cute!!!! I live 30 miles outside Atlanta,Georgia and would like to find these kids a good loving home. Normally if I didn't have any kids I would keep these in a heart beat; however, I currently have 4 indoor/outdoor cats of my own and 2 dogs and keeping everyone happy is getting tougher by the day. I have had to close off the garage for the new FeLV+ kittens so they are separated from my others. I am having construction start on my house next week and construction people will be in and out and doors get left open as they work. Therefore, this does not give me much time to find a home for my new found friends w/out putting my others at high risk if they were to get outside.(not to mention my neighbors all have outdoor kids). My fear is that if I can not find these girls a good/loving home who will tend to their needs, I may have to put them to rest(which I do not want to do because I know from researching that the possibility is there for them to live a full life). I have tried all pet/animal organizations and no one can take them here in the Atlanta area. PAWS To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Interferon Date sent: Tue, 18 Aug 1998 15:47:11 PDT Send reply to: "Isinofre Wyrm-bane" My friend, Smokina, was recently put on Interferon by our vet. She absolutly HATES the stuff and runs away when she sees me with the syringe. HELP!!! I know that the vet mixes the Interferon with normal saline solution and nothing else. He's very open minded and, I'm sure, would be willing to try something else. Also, she seems to have fallen into a funk since I started her on it. Did the Interferon cause this or should I be looking elsewhere. She's also on an antibiotic since she recently had a rather severe episode with swollen eyes and lots of pain. Any suggestions you have will be greatly appreciated. I'm very new to all of this and quite at a loss when it comes to medicating her. She's terribly difficult to pill and, well, the Interferon is going everywhere but into her tummy. I have some tranqs, but would rather find another way. I don't believe that she needs to be weakened any more, though my scratches say that she's in better shape than she looks. Thanks, guys. However, my Tut is doing ok with it. I just put the interferon in a syringe and squirt it in his mouth. He hates it too. Make sure you try to aim it at smokina's tonsils. I think that helps to get it in their immune system. I haven't mixed my interferon with anything. I just squirt it in. Good luck! I used a syringe and slowly gave him 1 ml under his tongue 7 days on then 7 off. He didn't seem to mind the taste, but a couple times he squeaked. I think it was because it was cold. It didn't depress my cat, but some say their cats get depressed on interferon. And some say their cats love the taste, while others hate it. Guess it depends on the cat. The Island Pharmacy phone # and address is on the Treatments Page, maybe if your vet gets it for you from them Smokina will like the taste better. I am very excited and happy for you--this is the news we can hang onto for a long time!! I think I may try echinacea again on Jake. It will probably not reverse him, but along with everything else, it may help. I use to put a little in with the cats' water--that way everyone got a spurt to their immune system. This is wonderful, wonderful news!! Nancy ---------------------------------------- Date sent: Tue, 18 Aug 1998 19:38:10 -0500 (CDT) From: "Nancy A. Now I see you've decided to stay and I am glad. You have a lot to offer and we would all miss you. Congrats too on your new adoptee. It's always sad to loose a beloved companion and always joyous to find a new one--not to replace the former but to enhance all our lives. Schmall" To: felvtalk Subject: re: clavamox Send reply to: "Nancy A. Schmall" Kathy, After seeing the last two posts, I realize Money has or had a UTI. I know a woman locally whose cat had recurrent UTIs and even after treatment, a UTI would return so . . . as Lynn suggested, this woman started opening a cranberry capsule and pouring the contents or at least some (starting small) over her cat's food and also giving the cat some ascorbic acid. It's been a few years and the cat has never had another UTI. Also, one of my vets recommends METHIO+FORM for the rest of the cat's life. It's a urinary acidifier which cats love--they think it's a treat. It will usually help keep a UTI at bay. Forgive me if someone's already mentioned this. I've been gone for a few days and am getting confused trying to keep up with 500 posts! Nancy ---------------------------------------- Date sent: Tue, 18 Aug 1998 20:02:35 -0500 (CDT) From: "Nancy A. Has there been any improvement? Have you considered a transfusion to buy a little time while something else might "kick" in? Thinking of you. Nancy ---------------------------------------- From: "George & Nancy" To: "Felv" Subject: Tut up date Date sent: Tue, 18 Aug 1998 21:17:01 -0400 Send reply to: "George & Nancy" All, Tut is holding his own right now. He still is not eating very well and is thin. Awhile back I was considering stopping all his meds but now I've decide not to. He is no better or worse. I spent all day with him yesterday in the yard. So today he is tired. He doesn't feel as warm so maybe the low grade temp he had for about 4 weeks is finally going away. He seems in a better mood today. I've thought about a transfussion but I'm just not sure. I'm going to look into a cat hospital in Pittsburgh to see if they can do anything more or what type of treatment they have. Nan ---------------------------------------- From: "zimmerman" To: "felvtalk" Subject: Tut and Smokina Date sent: Tue, 18 Aug 1998 21:43:06 -0400 Send reply to: "zimmerman" Deb and Nan, Interferon seems to be more effective when combined with ImmunoRegulin. Since both of your cats have symptoms and are on interferon this is something you could consider if your cats aren't too stressed by vet visits. Deb, JACKSON is pretty mellow and not difficult to medicate, but what worked for me was to hold him by the scruff and put the syringe in the corner of his mouth. He opened his mouth so I could aim the interferon under his tongue. I never got scratched, hope it works for you. He has been in alot of pain with his mouth. The "gingivitis" has gotten worse, it is all over his mouth, red and swollen. He got an injection of Depro-Medrol and a new (for Stinker) medicine, Flagyl. The vet said that one of the things it was good for was mouth infections. So, at least we're trying something new. Other than his mouth and eyes(not too bad) he is in good shape. He perked up when he got to the vets! Anyway, what I wanted to tell you is that tomorrow I am taking Stinker to another vet that is trained in acupuncture and herbal medicine. I am interested and kind of excited in what she has to offer. I will let you all know what happens.:).................Lynn(Stinker) ---------------------------------------- From: Chunk7@webtv.net Date sent: Wed, 19 Aug 1998 00:21:55 -0400 (EDT) To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Hi Send reply to: Chunk7@webtv.net Barb I would have e-mailed you privately but recently I left my boyfriend and my web tv as well so I dont have your address any more. the reason Im writing is because I have a friend whos kitten also has felv. actually its my kittens sister. my friend asked me to see if she could also get some Ambrotose. she doesnt have access to the web other than thru me. so if you could send me your address again , for when bob needs more. and if possible let me know how to get some for my friend as well.
