I have 13 now myself. All strays. We each do what we can. We can't save them all. What if nobody tries to save any? It's too bad man doesn't work as hard to save himself. You just keep doing what you're doing. You will always be able to look your self in the mirror and know you made a difference. So glad to hear the URI is almost gone and that Georgie's appetite is improving so that he's gaining wt again. Isn't it a relief to see them with that good ol' appetite back??? I love it. We'll all be there for you, and Tut. If you decide to keep up with the meds, have you talked to the vet about injectable meds or if they can make them liquid? That might be easier than pilling him. Whatever you decide, please know that you'll be supported. Two of my (older) cats got their third eyelids up after getting the new Frontline in sachet form, the one you apply at the back of the neck, so I went back to the spray! My vet does not think there is a connection. I tried to comb for the fleas, but with so many cats...., they even started to bite me!! But all of my cats hate the spray and poor Schurli wet himself the last time, so I am in a quandary, as I don't want to stress him!!! Try to keep your kitty in the towel for as long as possible. Make sure his head is not in the towel, but use one of the corners on top of his head, putting the triangle between his ears. This will kill the fleas, and prevent the spray from getting into their eyes and ears. There are also many natural, safe powders you can sprinkle around your home to help stop the fleas. You can use Brewer's yeast on your cat, and feed one teaspoon daily as a supplement to the diet. Also add one teaspoon daily of apple cider vinegar to the water or in wet food......this makes the cat's blood unappealing to the fleas. There are also many natural flea-control products available through the internet. Just remember, if there are cautions on the label about toxicity, the product probably isn't something you want to use. And, I am not certain Advantage and Frontline are the same, but I know they work the same, so I would be cautious. Talk to your vet about this! Almost all commercial flea-control products *should not* be used for cross-species applications. They are sugars utilized by the body as recognition molecules, and carry biological information from one cell to the next. Homeopathic remedies are dilutions of natural substances, but are not dosed in a way that would provide on-going nutrition. There may be a link, but the "glyco" prefix on the name of the remedy probably just means the remedy came from a sugar (carbohydrate) source. I know where you are - I've been there often. There are times when it's easy; there are times when the decision is taken from you; but most of the time you have to have that mental battle. As another e-friend said when making the same decision a few years ago, "I don't want to be the grownup now". As for picking up strays - well - an anecdote. My last "positively positive" FeLV cat went to a new home over the July 4th weekend. I am going to wait the 3 months, have everyone tested - then re-test 6 months later. One of the things I worry about is the fibrosarcoma problem. Haven't had any yet, knock wood, cross paws, pray to Bast - but I know the chance is there. So - when I was talking to my vet about the testing, I said to her, "So - if they all test negative twice, maybe we should stop the FeLV shots as well as the rabies(*)?". Her response was, "No, because I know you. You'll find antoher one to bring home." (this is why I keep this vet!) There are folks who can go out and get a cat. And be happy with that. Quite often it's a pedigreed cat that matches the furniture, even... Then there are the rest of us cat-folks. We have the cats for the cats' sakes - not for our own (or only partly for our own - purr and furr is very soothing). They can cause a lot of heartache, but the rewards are tremendous... If he is telling you to leave him be, then you know what to do. Sometimes just making our babies more comfortable is the best we can do--and that's no small thing. We will all help you have the strength to do what you have to do. I know this hurts terribly. My thoughts and prayers are with you and Tut. I have been using Advantage on all of mine for a couple of years now - including on the 'feral' colony that Gaia was the last of. She had had about 3 Advantage applications up to earlier this year, when I found a tick on her. I saw a notice saying that Frontline was the one to use for Ticks, so I got some Frontline for her. I applied it on a Friday morning; Since she was still outside - I didn't see her that day at lunch or after work, and not during the weekend. She didn't show up on Monday, either. She finally showed up Tuesday, and she had a *HUGE* "lump" on the back of her neck. Turned out to be a lump of fur about the size of a ping-pong ball - right where I'd applied the Frontline. I think the only thing that kept her from scratching the area raw was the clump of fur. I haven't tried the Frontline on any other cats - and at this time don't intend to. In fact, I'm concerned now that she'll also have a reaction to Advantage - but I haven't tested that yet. I won't use sprays any more, because it seems to me from watching them that the cats don't ingest as much Advantage as they did the old powders & sprays. With 8 cats, I use a Very Large Dog size and split it up - since they share fleas, that small amount per cat seems to be working. When Jodi came into my life--only a couple of short days after I lost Lefty--I was only taking her because she was suffering at my friend's house. I took her in, but pretty much expected her to be a ghost of a presence in my home. She was so scared after her very rough life so far that I never expected much from her in the way of affection. She had been physically abused and wouldn't allow anyone to touch her except on her head or neck. It was sad, but I thought she may be happy just being left alone. BOY WAS I WRONG! I took her in for her sake, but she has become such an affectionate little...uh...big fat furball that I am thrilled to death to have the privilege of being 'hers'! I thought I was doing something good for HER but she has filled a very big void in my home since Lefty. And yeah, there are those who have the 'ornamental' cats...and then there are those (like us) who have the one-eyed, broken tailed, less than perfect cats....and just who do you think gets the most reward??????? He couldn't hold up his head, he was so weak. Won't make it thru the night probably, I was told. To far gone. But he did. Zack is now my biggest cat at 14 lbs. Yes, I have a one eyed boy to. His eye shot out by some evil person. But what a lover he is now. Strays and the unwanted are the best. Even if we are only graced with their company for a short while, we are better for it. barb ps both Zack and my One eyed Jack are felv negative. They carry the plague and serve no purpose I can think of.
