She is right, it's both effective and cheap. Also, you can give as much as 1/2 a 4 mg tab twice a day. "..is manufactured with whole leaf organically grown Aloe Vera that is extremely high in mucopolysaccharide content...The formula also contains Yucca Schidigera, vitamins and minerals. Yucca Schidigera, a species of the yucca plant, contains high levels of natural saponins. These saponins are biologically active compounds and have shown positive results in many livestock feeding trials in enhancing performance measured by feed conversion, weight gain, livability; etc. The main reason Yucca Schidigera is included.. is because of it's ability to reduce ammonia levels.....in one study, fecal odor was reduced by as much as 49% in cats" (the brochure) I haven't been able to get to their web-site, so if someone would care to go and enlighten me......... that would be great http://www.tds.net/pharm-aloe > Folks, if any of you veterans out there have heard good or bad about this product, please let me know. It's less expensive than Ambrotose, and unfortunately, that's a factor for me. But, I will spring for the Ambrotose if anybody has heard anything bad about the Pet-Aloe Crumbles or it's other ingredients. I figure aloe is a good place to start from, so it probably couldn't hurt. Well, it's been a while since I've updated. Ninja had been having black stools and seemed a little constipated. I've been giving her hairball ointment to try to help grease things up inside. To add to the mystery, I was running low on her meds and had my vet send me replacements instead of my regular pharmacy. Now the problem with THAT, is that they use different brands and they must taste different because she foams at the mouth with these new ones something awful. And while she's foaming and smacking her lips, she's looking up at me w/the most pitiful expression on her little face. "How could you do this to me? I'm a good kitty." Then she shakes her head and cat spit goes flying everywhere. That's been twice a day since Friday evening. This past weekend, she was quiet, almost lethargic and not very interested in much of anything, not even tuna. She also vomited a couple of times. Well, yesterday morning, she woke me up with her "Mommy!!! I'm gonna puke!" yowls. Very early. So I found my glasses and found her in the bathroom throwing up. She proceeded to walk around the apartment trying to have a bowel movement. (This was obvious because when she had a bladder infection, she was squatting and hissing.) When she poops, she stands up on her tippy toes and you can see her tummy muscles working away and the concentration on her little face. She was cussing at me and growling and I was starting to get really worried: bowel obstructions can be very serious and frequently require surgery. I checked beneath her tail and couldn't really see anything out of the ordinary and she was growling so I left her be and just watched her. She sat down for about a minute, but she got up again and kept walking around trying to poop. Never in the bathroom either. so I had a towel on the floor in the living room just in case. After about 20-30 minutes, she finally pooped!! I was so happy for her. I checked her box and before she had woken me up, she had passed the last of the black stool. Apparently, whatever had caused the irritation has resolved, but there had been a log jam of sorts and the leading end of her 'victory' stool yesterday was at least twice the diameter as the rest of it. Poor kitty. She went and hid in her sick place for a little while, but came out of her own accord and seemed fine. She was in much better spirits last night and this morning and in fact, she cuddled with me for almost 2 hours last night!!! This is amazing for her. She usually just hangs out with me; generally JUST out of arm's reach. I was laying on my side watching TV and she came into the living room and asked if she could sit with me (she generally waits for an invitation) and she lay down in front of me (right up next to me) at the perfect distance for a belly rub. She stayed there for almost 2 hours, purring the whole time!!! It was absolutely wonderful:-) She still foamed at the mouth this morning, so I called her vet and she called in the prescriptions to my regular pharmacy so we'll be going back to the old brand and keep this other stuff as back-up. Sunday night, I even tried given the prednisolone separately from the phenobarbital to see if it was only one of them causing the foaming. Nope. She foamed with both. So. Ninja had an uncomfortable weekend, but hopefully the black stools are gone for good and her bowels are back in normal working order. I mean, how do you explain to a cat that she'll feel better soon when it's a potty problem? I tell her and try to comfort her, but I wish it helped more. Anyway, thanks for listening! I bought them a long time ago, before I started using Ambrotose. The active dietary ingredient in Aloe Vera is the naturally-occuring sugar mannose. The Ambrotose contains all 8 of the sugars, including mannose, known to be essential for proper functioning of cells. I can send you the crumbles for $3, the cost for Priority Mail. I don't recall seeing any significant improvement in my cats by when I used the crumbles. For those of you who want to use an aloe supplement go to They have whole aloe vera capsules, and the scienctific studies on their products posted on their website. Don't order the aloe vera juice for your cats----it's preserved with sodium benzoate. If anyone out there can tell Barb how long one of the packets of Ambrotose lasts that might be a help, too.......I have no idea how long one of the $22 packets I send out will last. Maybe two months? IT REALLY MAKES ME FEEL BETTER TALKING TO ALL OF YOU AND READING ABOUT THE PROBLEMS AND SOLUTION THAT YOU HAVE TRIED. I GOT TUT TO EAT A SMALL CAN OF CAT FOOD YESTERDAY. THE FIRST THING HE HAS EATEN IN 3 DAYS. HE HASN'T EATEN ANYTHING YET TODAY. HOWEVER, HE DID GO OUTSIDE. HE WALKS ALITTLE BIT AND THEN LAYS DOWN AND WALKS A LITTLE MORE. WE STARTED THE PET-TINNIC TODAY. TOMORROW WE TALK TO THE VET ABOUT IMMUNO REGULIN AND EPOGEN. THE LAST FEW MONTHS HAVE BEEN SUCH A ROLLER COASTER RIDE!! He needs to have food in his system, and if you have to use a syringe to force-feed him, please do it. If he doesn't eat his liver can start to shut down----one of my cats almost died when this happened. He got hepatic lipidosis. Cost $800 of hospitalization to get him back on his feet. Maybe barb can explain exactly what the condition is, and why it is so dangerous. Even giving plain canned goat's milk (next to the "regular" canned milk in most grocery stores) will help, or fresh, from the health food section. I have added Mannacleanse to my cats' protocol. Seems to work really well, with no diarrhea, and no more smelly bowel movements. It's from Mannatech (of course) and will be glad to send you a few tablets for Ninja to try. Has probiotics, EFA's, plant enzymes, essential oils, and natural fibers. I decided to try it after reading some of the newest research we have----thought it might help to keep their systems healthy, especially since all of them have had antibiotics at some point in time. (BTW, did you know that the word "antibiotic" means against life?) As for the foaming at the mouth after pills, I've noticed on many occasions that if I don't get a pill all the way down the throat, foaming ensues. It is distressing for both the human and the kitty, and I'd bet the house that it makes for an awful taste in the kitty's mouth. It seems to me that many pills will cause foam if they are allowed to dissolve in the mouth. So make sure that you are getting those suckers all the way down into Ninja's throat, so there is no chance for dissolving in the mouth. Good luck! I then stroke her throat to ensure swallowing of the nasties and she's still foaming. I'm sure it tastes nasty, but better a bad taste in your mouth than seizures. I used to use a pill shooter, but half the time she'd spit the pill out and foam all over the place and I have found that my syringe method works really well. The foaming just started recently with the different brand of pill. Must be different inert ingredients. We're going back to her old brand tonight. I'll let you all know how it goes. Does Ninja fight when you just try to (gently, of course) jam the pills down his throat? That is the approach I always come back to. Also, I am interested in the details of how you give the interferon. When we were giving it to Molly (which was only 3 times), it made her foam each time, even when I thought that I had squirted it all the way down her throat. I hope we don't have to go back to giving it to her, but, if we do, I'd sure like to do a better job of it.
