I'd known from the previous spring that he might be FeLV+; Robert - I'm so sorry. I was lucky that the two FeLV's who came into my life were already quite old (they were 17 and 22 when they died), and Princess now has a new home, and hopefully a few years still. I stay on this list also because even though they were isolated, it's possible the disease was passed on; and the two babies, even though they tested negative at first - their father was FeLV+. I'll be re-testing in October - and again 3 months later, and am hoping that they all come up negative - but I'm here because of the real chance they won't be. I, too, am expecting the worst, and hoping for the best (meaning, it will be easier for me to deal with if I believe they are all positive, and it turns out none are, than if I believe they are all negative, and it turns out some are...) I think your message got lost in the thread...I'm just now sorting through yesterday's mail and found it. Vitamin C is supposed to boost the immune system and help the body fight off disease. (Very general explanation). The debate is over how much to give...many have advocated mega-dosing of vit. C, but some, like Steve's vet acquaintance, have found some serious problems w/ megadosing. I have to try to remember that everything I give to my cats has to be processed through the kidney or liver.... I will miss you and will think of you often with nothing but good thoughts--that perhaps there is a good reason things are going so crappy for you, that in the end something will turn out much better than you ever thought possible. At any rate, I wish you all the best in the world. You are a wonderful person and deserve so much better. Rissa-Tai was up to 8 pounds 14 ounces, which means she pretty much gained a pound in the last three weeks. The tech and vet both say her little tummy fat pad is adorable! Dr. Bolser called this morning with the cbc results. Her hematocrit is at 46%, her wbc is 9000, in her differentials her lymphocytes are still a little low and her monocytes are a little high, but nothing to worry about. Her rbc is actually over high normal at this point! We just have to watch that it doesn't really go much higher, or we could have problems in the other direction. Dr. Bolser says we should just keep doing what we've been doing and just enjoy the miracle! The only other thing - if she and Lai-Tai keep gaining weight like this, we'll have to put them back on the lite food only! Thanks to everyone for the support and advice. Jim, we had thought we would lose her by May, but she's still here now thanks to this list. Keep smiling! Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net yes, I did contact her vet yesterday to schedule her next vaccine appointment. I mentioned her teeth and the vet said not to worry to much unless she stops eating entirely. He said her mouth will probably be soar for a few days so she probably wont eat much dry food. He said to just make sure she has sufficient amounts of canned food to fill her up. He also said to pay close attention when she eats for the next couple days to see if her appetite decreases and if it does bring her in to be checked out. So I'll be watching, she eats as much canned food as she can get and she manages to eat some treats which are pretty hard. so I guess I'll just have to wait and see.I have taped foam ( bumpers) to all the table corners so she wont get hit so hard next time. every time she starts walkingaround like that I move her to a more open space to try and teach her where is safe. I think she realizes that the tables can hurt her so she seems to stop when she gets to close. My vet also told me if I dont glamorize it by laughing and praising her when she does it maybe she will eventually stop if she cant get attention from it. I dont know but it is classical to see she looks so sure of herself. see ya Sarah and Bob ---------------------------------------- Date sent: Sat, 1 Aug 1998 14:21:34 -0500 (CDT) From: "Nancy A. I wanted to thank those of you who responded about using Frontline on Jake. My vet concurs and so I will begin using it. Good news--2 months ago, Jake was borderline on this platelets. He had to go up from 2.5mg. prednisone every 5 days to 5 mg. pred every f days. His count went back up to 233. I started using the ambrotose religiously. I don't know what it was, but yesterday his count was up to 298! I'm backing off very, very slowly on the pred. I'm going to start giving him 2.5 mg. every 3 days and keep it there for about 3 mos.. I think what happened maybe 2 months ago was that we were getting down to the lower doses and then tapering too fast. I am also going to keep up with the ambrostose because it may be responsible for his vast improvement. His poor veins are showing the negative effects of taking blood too often (I didn't even know this would happen) so I'm going to back on testing his blood so often--we'll see how it goes every 3 mos or so. Anyways, just wanted to share. Sounds like you are doing all the right things. I believe you're right about the Ambrotose. Tails' eyes (he was almost blind) have already started clearing up. Is it the good thoughts, the focused attention, the supplements, the ambrotose, the remedy? Who knows, but it seems to be working :) Sounds like you're definitely on the right track. Wishing you the best. C & will excrete it. So, I don't know how much. The Oxi-Tab from Drs. Foster & Smith that I've given my cats for months has under 100 mg daily. The only guideline I've heard is Steve's post that said under 1000 mg per week, but probably less than that. So I wonder too. I've been giving Hershey (and all my others ) something called "Barley Cat" each day in their canned food. And... I just looked at the ingredients... and it's got among other things..... .5mg of ascorbic acid! Sheesh! isn't that otherwise known at VITAMIN C?! Hmmmm.. maybe I should just increase the amount of "Barley cat" that Hershey is getting each day and return the stuff I bought with Bio-flavonoids? What are the "Oxi- Tabes" that you're referring to ?? what are in those besides Vitamin C??? Debby, & the HBG (the HairballGang) ---------------------------------------- From: "zimmerman" To: "felvtalk" Subject: Re: How much C we wonder Date sent: Sat, 1 Aug 1998 21:26:59 -0400 Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Debby & Barb, I guess nobody said this would be easy. Drs. Foster & Smith is a catalog by 2 vets. In the catalog their brand of antioxidant (Oxi-Tabs) that I have been using says it can be given along with other supplements. In addition to 100mg Vit. C, it also has 5000 IU Vit. A & 50 IU Vit. E. According to the human dose this is way to high for cats & they are fat -soluble so excesses are dangerous. Pet-Tabs for cats have 1500 IU Vit. A & 4 IU Vit. E - that seems right. So, since I started the grape seed antioxidant anyway I'll drop the Oxi-Tab. I have Barley Cat too, but I haven't used it for a while. Might as well add a little of that. Since vets can't agree it's no wonder we're confused. Stinker gets that also. (George's infuser is right next to his night light :->) I plugged in the infuser then went upstairs for a while. When I came back down, George had moved on his bed so that he could be closer to the infuser! It looked that way at least. He's breathing more easily though he's getting antsy now that he's feeling better. I'm trying to think long-term here and we have a carpenter handy-man coming next week (I hope), so I've got to decide how we're going to arrange this for Georgie boy. Yesterday, I also got some Ginseng Royal Jelly (which Allen Schoen, DVM, author of _Love, Miracles, and Animal Healing_ claims is an excellent appetite stimulant, energy enhancer, and immune booster--I mentioned something about this a couple weeks ago before I knew we'd be taking in George and that he was positive). I don't know about all that yet, but the stuff is yummy. I put a little (six drops more or less) on George's food and licked the spoon! MMMMM. Of course, *I* don't need an appetite stimulant.... With encouragement, George cleaned his bowl this morning--about 2/3 cup, so I feel pretty good about that. (He's also getting the thymus, CoQ10, and the immunoregulin, as well as an antibiotic (Cefadroxil) for his URI). Kathy, I told my vets about Thomas, and while skeptical, they seemed interested to see if we, too, could strengthen Georgie's immune system enough to fight off this &%$#@ disease. Marilyn, I thought of you when I read the last line of Schoen's book: "[L]ove is the only force that can make us thoroughly sensitive and responsive to the needs of others, animal and human alike."
