All of the old-timers have already presented their thoughts. For the newcomers, I offer you this to think about: Vets throughout this country cannot agree on the benefits, if any, of administering large doses of Vit-C to our kitties. One vet was forced by the members of this list, to change his wild claim that mega-doses of Vit-C had a 100% cure rate for FeLV. Since even the vets cannot agree, it would seem prudent that we err on the side of caution on this issue. It is entirely possible that the "cure" in this case, is worse than the disease. I would suggest that all the newcomers who are interested in the benefits, if any, of large doses of Vit-C, read carefully the offerings of the old timers on the list with regard to this issue as well as visit the archives and read up on the issue there, BEFORE jumping on this bandwagon. Then decide for yourselves. A caveat here to anyone thinking about going into the health food store and buying a few homeopathic remedies for your cat.........these remedies are potent, and if selected improperly can kill your cat. Do not use homeopathic remedies on your cat unless they have been prescribed by your homeopathic vet. Most homeopathic vets will do phone consultations. They will ask questions about your cat's preference for heat or cold, whether he likes to drink running water, his general attitude, etc. A good homeopath will be able to diagnose and prescribe if you give him good information. Again, no homeopathic remedies for *any* cat unless prescribed by a homeopathic vet. Did Pitcarin say why you should take Tails off the interferon? Did he remark at all about the echinacea? I am truly sorry Tails *does* have FIP (if he does). Was he tested for FIV? The reason I'm asking is Jake had a high total protein last October (only one marker that I *know* of) and he has FIV not FIP. I truly hope your homeopathic vet can come up with something. I don't often mention that I am a nurse, because I had it pointed out to me by someone no longer on the list, that mentioning that fact seems to make people feel that anything I say is gospel. I assure you, it is not, but I want to caution folks that large doses of anything are not always a good thing. Vit D,E,K,and A are fat soluable vitamins and are stored by the body and processed by the liver. Large doses of these can do serious damage to the liver and kidneys. The others are water soluable and excesses are excreted by the kidneys and not stored. To give a 10 lb. cat a human dose of a vitamin, who's average weight is considered about 160 lbs., is a huge overdose. Perhaps the best thing would be to find a cat vitamin, where the doses are made just for cats. I know, they won't eat them, mine won't either, but there are a few that will, if you find the right kind. Most vets carry them. Or they can be crushed and sprinked on food. I would urge everyone to discuss the need for and best way and how much to give with your vet. When my Merlin would not eat, or eat enough to get his vitamins in, I gave him Polyvisol baby vitamins. They are liquid, nasty and he hated them, but with baby vitamins, I didn't have to worry about overdosing him. Just a thought. barb ---------------------------------------- From: "zimmerman" To: "felvtalk" Subject: Vit. There's more, most before my time. I have skimmed the entire archives. Unfortunately I'm not computer organized & most of my notes are mental (no comments, please) or written (well, it made sense when I wrote it). The search engine usually helps, but computers can be sooo picky & when I wait twice & get "No Documents Found" I get frustrated & give up. I'm glad some of you have your own "easy access" & are willing to help find things. :) Beth ---------------------------------------- Date sent: Fri, 31 Jul 1998 15:53:19 -0400 To: felvtalk@MailingList.net From: three ring circuits Subject: Re: Vitamin C Dangers Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net To Randall and anyone else who can help! I'm not a Pitcairn follower. But I do know that there are many vets who caution the over use of some of these vitamins. The Vit C can cause crystals in the urine which can damage the tiny ureters and kidneys and the A and E in particular, can damage the liver. But I am talking extended use, not short term use. There may well be some benefit from short term use. But extended use would make me very nervous. barb ---------------------------------------- From: "Lynn or Josiah Stickels" To: "felvtalk" Subject: Anbesol??? No ascorbin powder, I hope - nothing pure, anyway, I hope even more.. You might contact a homeopath and ask for 'Baptisia Tinctoria', this is a good remedy for inflamations in mouth, nose, throat and tongue. In the meanwhile, you might try some good old camilla tea, do a good pour in his drinking water. (Don't get some instant crap, get some good, pure camilla from the health shop or the pharmacy and brew a tea the oldfashioned way, let it draw a good while with the camilla flowers swimming in it and colden with time) Camillosan is even better, but first watch if he drinks the water with the camilla tea in at all. I'm not sure if he loves you rubbing something on his hurting gums, but if you do it anyway, maybe have some soft stuff like mull and wet it with a warm (!) camillosan or camilla solution, and then don't rub, but just tip it on his gums. You can also use the camilla flowers from the tea, wrap them in mull and make a little package from it, wet it in some handwarm tea or camillosan and tip it softly on his gums. Take care that there is nothing hard in it. And of course - no dry food, no hard meat, nothing that is hard to chew and rub along the gums. Instead, you might try some liquid extra goodies he loves (tuna juice, chicken soup or whatever) and spread little bowls with it around mixed with a good share of camilla tea. And look for a good homeopath! All the best Rena (RDC) ---------------------------------------- END
