I always talk to my cats in a soft sing songy voice but I have not tried actually singing. Before I got your mail I was actually thinking of putting a radio in the room with them, with the sound down very low. My biggest problem is that I dont have enought time to spend with them - I have a full time job + I am feeding a friends ferals while she is on holiday which means I leave home at 6.30am and often dont get home in the evening until after 6pm by which time it is dark. This is the reason why I try not to take ferals in but in this case there was nowhere else for them to go. Thanks for your suggestion about singing, I will definitely try it. PS Years ago, I applied for a 36 hour day. This would really help alot but it seems no-one out there is listening!!!! ---------------------------------------- From: "Mandy Crerar" To: Subject: Re: Vet Update Date sent: Thu, 30 Jul 1998 03:33:47 +0200 Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Will do as soon as it is complete which should be within the next week or so. However until someone hears my plea for a 36 hour day, this will remain just a threat!!! Thanks for your kind thoughts. Date sent: Thu, 30 Jul 1998 04:06:55 +0200 Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net I couldnt agree more with your comment about sending vets to school for years so they can guess. The problem is that it is these "guesses" that are given to people and based on these "guesses" animals get put to sleep. Many vets also dont like being told by lay people like ourselves (in other words, we havent spent years in school prior to our guess work!!). Do you find this? I'm a newcomer, but can see that you have a lot to offer in regards to helping our kitties. I was reading about your're giving Tails certain supplememts, CoQ10, specifically, but also Vit E and Vit C. How much of each and when and how often to you give these. Also, how do you give it. . .mixed w/food or ???. Talking about getting your kitty to eat. . .have you tried baby food? I know that when my "Pushy" won't eat much of anything else, he'll rarely turn his nose up at turkey in broth, ham in broth, or chicken in broth baby food. This can get somewhat expensive, but to help over a short period of really finicky eating, it can be a lifesavor for both kitty and the distraught parent. Well, anyway, good luck with Tails. Sounds like a brave little trooper. Thanks again for your informative letter. A zillion cyber cheers from all the kitties who have been saved from certain death by the folks on this list. A double-gazillion cheers (that's a heck of a lot) from young Titch who is still doing well on Interferon, raw mince, Iams, and tons of TLC. Luv ya all. Could you please tell me what PDG is for future reference? Thanks so much. Intesting about the Interferon too. I just started Pushy on it today because he has sore mouth due to gum inflamation because of his FeLV. Antibiotics haven't helped so I'm hoping the Interferon will. My vet says just to keep him on it permanently, but I'm really hesitant to do this. What do others think? Thanks again. Bye. I'm going to let some of the more experienced folks jump in here with some answers, but I can tell you what I am doing. I mix all of Tails' supplements together (crushed if pill) and add them to some chicken broth. I syringe this down him about 4 times a day. As far as dosage, Dr, Pitcairn has advised me to megadose on Vitamin C because it's a great immune-system booster. I am giving 1000 mg of Vitamin C daily. Dr. Pitcairn recommends (for animals with immune system disorders) a daily dosage of 500 to 2000 mg. The general rule is to give Vitamin C to bowel tolerance. Vitamin E, I give 400 i.u. weekly. I'm also sold on Ambrotose (get some), and I'm doing other things to support Tails' liver. As far as CoQ10, I'll let the others jump in here. I've just started with that. I have tried baby food, juicy broiled chicken, pureed chicken, pureed liver, chicken in broth, turkey in broth, you name it. But thank you very much for the suggestions. I know that many people will add the kitty's supplements to baby food, and the kitty eats it up just fine. I hear ya on the antibiotic situation. Really, as I found out, it's all about researching, asking questions, researching more, asking more questions, and then finally going with your instinct on what's best for your cat. It took me a while to get to that point, but I'm here now and it feels really good. Also it depends on whether you're wanting to go the allopathic route (traditional medicine) or an alternative route (holistic medicine). That's a personal choice. What really clinched it for me was putting myself in Tails' shoes (paws). If this were happening to me, how would I want to be helped? That cleared things up a bit and motivated me to drop the interferon and to go with a more natural approach. According to everything I've read, nutrition is paramount because the main goal here (as Barb said so perfectly once) is to get the cat's immune system functioning again. All of these drugs and non-drugs are attempts to do that. I'm choosing a homeopathic approach. What you decide must be in concert with who you are and who your cat is. I wish you the best in finding that out. She's given Tails a remedy: Mercurius vivus. Low potency (30x) to be used daily until conditions improve. Anyone heard of it or used it? I'm just taking a more natural approach with him. Right, no more hard drugs :) I'd heard of the Valium stimulating the appetite, but again we're not injecting anything now. The vitamin B sounds promising, though. What if Tails is *under* 8 pounds? (he weighs 6.5 now) Also, I'm going to use alfalfa with him. It's a natural appetite stimulant. Thank you for the kind words. I'm glad that I could be of help in the short time I've been here. I'm glad the research I've been doing is helping. Interesting that you mention TB, because the homeopathic remedy I got today was given to TB patients way back when. Many of the same symptoms with that also exist with FIP (umm, I mean, mustard). As long as it's not a prescription medication, there are no laws against it, so lets us know. barb ---------------------------------------- From: EchoSynch@aol.com Date sent: Thu, 30 Jul 1998 16:33:30 EDT To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Vitamin C: Form & Administration Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Hiya Debby, Thanks for the nice words. Your question isn't silly at all. The vitamin C I got is in pill form. There is some confusion as far as what kind of vitamin C to get. Some say sodium ascorbate, some say calcium ascorbate because it's tasteless and easier on the stomach. Some say Ester C. To be honest, I still haven't figured all of that out. But I do know that it should *not* be the ascorbic acid. In any event, here's what I do: In the morning, I get all of the vitamins, Ambrotose, etc. for the day. There are many. I get a little baby food jar and add all of the capsule contents into that (throw away the capsules, gelcaps, etc.). Then I crush the vitamins that are pills with a pill crushers and add those. I warm up some chicken broth (not in the microwave) and mix it all up. I let it cool and then I give Tails some of this about 4 times a day with a syringe. I have to do it this way, because he's not eating much and I can't guarantee what he'll be eating or if he'll be eating that day. But if your kitty is eating, you can surely disguise all of this into his food, or into some baby food. Well, since my involment w/ the list, I find myself offering folks like yourself who live outside the US, to send them items that they can't get where they live. I'm doing this for several reasons. a. It's helping me come to terms w/ Alice's loss. She was much loved & now dearly missed. b. Felv is a terrible disease w/many complications of its own, however, geography shouldn't be one of them. c. I like being helpful big time. d. making friends w/folks from all over the globe is FUN. Now having said that, if there's any remedy mentioned on the list that you'd want but can't get in South Africa, please let me know. Saliha ---------------------------------------- From: WORKPARK@aol.com Date sent: Thu, 30 Jul 1998 19:00:29 EDT To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Lai-Tai's vet visit Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Hi all, Well, we went to the vet today. I had bought the Bach's rescue Remedy to try on Lai-Tai since she hates the vet SO much. I know this works after everything I've read here on the list, but there was one problem that was never addressed - how in the world do you get it into a cat who will NOT hold her head still, shakes it and basically says to me NO NO NO Never, not in my lifetime, not in yours, over our very still lifeless bodies! So much for trying it out today on her. Anyway, she made it to the vet's in one piece, where they told me that when she was there in May to get her teeth cleaned that they had noted in her chart that this cat becomes "very angry" while she is at the vet's. She had gained 12 ounces since then (thank you growth cat food!). She actually just grumbled some for them, we decided she was showing off for her mama. Anyway, since her sneezles and whiffling noises are clear, nothing colored, her temp is normal, her lungs sound good, and her lymph nodes feel normal, the vet said since she is such a demon to get meds into that we should wait a few days and see what happens. She may just be having allergies, which this would be the first year like this for her. It's been raining a lot here in Southern Arizona this year and the monsoons have really just started - if it is allergies they will last through the season. If any of her snot turns yellow or green, we'll try antibiotics, but if it's viral, it will have to run it's course anyway. Hard to believe that this is really a very sweet lovey cat when she isn't at the vet's and when we aren't trying to get anything into her! The vet will check Rissa-Tai out tomorrow while we are there to make sure she is ok, but she is doing wonderfully. Her appointment tomorrow will be the first in three weeks, and it looks like she is still gaining weight. Will report in after her visit. Pam ---------------------------------------- END
