Monday July 27, 1998 Part 3 8 Messages ======================================== From: RElgee@aol.com Date sent: Mon, 27 Jul 1998 23:11:39 EDT To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: why I am member of list Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net In January my beloved Scruffy, age aprox. 16 months, was diagnosed with lymphoma. I'd known from the previous spring that he might be FeLV+; the vet pointed out that he had gingivitis and warned that it might be a marker, but I never had him tested because I wasn't aware of any effective treatments. I could have kept alive another 2-3 months with chemo, but I think I would have only been doing it out of my own selfishness and cowardice. I arranged for our vet to come to house and put Scruff to sleep while I held in my arms. Hardest thing I ever had to do. We have three surviving cats; Gina and Tina, who we adopted from a friend who died of AIDS, and Max, a stray we took in last year. When I became aware ot this list, I signed on to educate myself to the alternatives if this ugly disease should raise it's ugly head again. My apologies for taking list off-topic. Well, Ninja's actually doing pretty well. Last weekend (10 days ago), I tried to start decreasing her prednisone, in hopes of eventually being able to give her Acemannan. The dose on which she's been stable (as in no seizure activity) is one tab, twice a day. Along with her phenobarbital, which is a ½ tab, twice a day. Her vet and I wanted to do the taper VERY slowly, so we decided to go 1 tab in the morning and then ½ tab in the evening and see how she did on that. I only had the heart to do it for 2 days (Friday and Saturday). I could tell immediately that she needs the higher dose. She got very quiet and her eyes dilated more and her nictating membranes extended and she wasn't playing and on Saturday, she was indifferent to tuna!!!! By Tuesday, she was talking again and loving the tuna and playing. But that Monday morning last week, she had some dizziness. She jumped up on the bed and almost tipped over a couple times as she was trying to sit down. She managed to lay down and then was fine. But on Thursday, she had black stools. I definitely didn't like the look of that. I talked to the vet and since she seems fine otherwise, was told to watch her this weekend for behavioral changes and more black stool. Well, there was some Saturday night. I'm currently waiting for a call from the vet. Is this a possible side-effect from either the pred or the phenobarb? It's not black all the way through, but it took her 4 trips to the box (like she's constipated). It's not stinkier than normal. Her mood is good; she's playing and talking and walking on her hind feet for tuna:-) which is so funny to watch!! She's eating and drinking and grooming and sleeping plenty. Sometimes I feel like I'm being a hypochondriac for her, but w/this virus, you have to watch every little change. Usually, it's nothing major, but jeez, this &#$@)(@_%&#*@%#^$ rollercoaster!!!!!! Well, I'll post what the vet says. Hopefully it's nothing major and I won't have to take her in. But, my mom's visiting this weekend and she could take us:-) Barb+Ninja ---------------------------------------- From: katseven@pcsia.com Date sent: Mon, 27 Jul 1998 17:39:08 -0600 Subject: Re: George To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Marilyn, Thanks for this message--as usual you say just the right thing. (or find someone who has!) Your comment about George's life being "so precious" is absolutely true. Once I read your message, I felt even more reassured that things would work out. I'm so sorry to hear about your accident. I hope you're on the mend--I'm also sending healing vibes. CANDLE CEREMONY Written by Lisa Singer (lsinger@aol.com) The candles being lit tonight; Cast a soft and welcome flame. And draw our loved ones to the light, As we call to them by name. Imagine spirits taking flight, For a moment our souls entwine. Say not Good Night, but in some Brighter Time Bid them all- Good Morning. WE GATHER TOGETHER TO HONOR AND REMEMBER OUR PETS Tonight, Monday, we join hands, hearts and souls across the land as one large extended family to pray for our sick and dying pets and to pay tribute to our furbabies who have gone ahead to Rainbow Bridge. Someday, we will meet them again, with hugs, tears and kisses, as we walk together, in eternity, to our new home. Until that blessed day, we honor these precious souls and remember them with the warm glow of flickering candles, sending a message of love, light and healing, and the faith to believe in miracles. PRAYER: God, Creator of all living things, we ask that as we light our candles, the healing warmth of love will flow into the brokenhearted who are tending their ailing pets. Give to them Your strength and comfort. We also pray that the soft glow of light will part the clouds of grief and sorrow to surround our furbabies at the Bridge. May excitement REIGN SUPREME as wagging tails and ecstatic purrs feel our gentle touch once again. May they know the gratitude we hold in our hearts for their faithfulness and gift of unconditional love as they are forever remembered. We are temporarily separated for only a short while. The silver cord that connects us through time and space can never be broken. AMEN. CANDLE 1: BRIDGE FUR CHILDREN Read the names of those who have gone on before us as a tribute to them and their loving parents. As we all meet here, our Bridgekids will be meeting all newcomers, easing their way. I will not look back for there is sorrow. I will not look for today for there is longing. I will look forward for there is OUR tomorrow. CANDLE 2: SPECIAL NEEDS FUR CHILDREN Read the names of all those who are sick, injured, or have special circumstances. Tails (that the treatment to boost his immune system is successful) Randall George (that the treatment is successful) Susan Domenique (that the treatments will bring back her health) Kat EPC Beatrice (that she remains in good health until there is a cure) Saliha Schurli (that the treatment may really help) Sonja Ninja (for continued success in treatment of meningioma and FeLV) Barb Sophia (for continued good health) Gina & JoAnn Luke four-year-old male (for continued success of treatment for felv and for a good home) Gina & Joann Rissa-Tai (for continued improvement) Pam & Chuck Howling Kitty four-year-old male with advanced lymphosarcoma & felv Arlene Grey Tabby in Little Rock, Arkansas (felv+, needs home) Cheri G. Misha Chere Together we unite to give thanks for the special pets who have improved in health and strength. We also, being of one heart, pray for the Mommies, Daddies, and little ones who struggle together against serious illness. We remember in quiet reverence the special ones who left us and we pray for the grieving families left behind. And we can never forget all who work to save the homeless and abused animals. Their burden is never light. With one heart, all are remembered and forever cherished by this family of love. CANDLE 3: FOR ACKNOWLEDGMENT AND PEACE In honor of all the homeless, forgotten, abandoned, abused animals. For the nameless little ones who gave their lives for others, for research and as a result of humankind's inhumanity. May the Higher Powers that be forgive the cruelty. We light this candle for them. As our lights shine brightly through the galaxy, may the angels smile upon us, and know that for a brief moment, we have put aside worldly differences to bond as ONE. CLOSING: I have sent you on a journey to a land free from pain, not because I did not love you, but because I loved you too much to force you to stay. MOMENT OF SILENCE. "Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted." Love, light and healing to all. Amen. ---------------------------------------- Date sent: Mon, 27 Jul 1998 19:49:20 -0400 From: Paula Sherrod To: "felvtalk@MailingList.net" Subject: [Fwd: NYC Latest on trapped animals] Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net All, I'm still here....still read posts every day and am sympathizing, laughing, crying, etc. I only chime in when I think what I say will help (like my experiences with feline leukemia). I thought I'd forward this post from an animal rights list I subscribe to. I think this is the latest info on the NYC fiasco. God bless you all for your concern...I can't believe this is happening. If my cats were trapped I'd go psycho and storm the place. Paula ---------------------------------------- Date sent: Mon, 27 Jul 1998 18:51:20 -0500 (CDT) From: "Nancy A. Start smacking on the ugly head before it has a chance to raise.:) My one cat tested +, but hasn't been sick, so I'm giving him supplements to try to keep him healthy.
