The "easy" way out, I guess. I am putting together a protocol based on what I have learned from being on this list and plan to distribute it to all the vets in the country in due course. I will also be doing the same thing for FIP once I feel I have enough information. Good luck with Tails - the very best is all you can ever do. He is one lucky little guy to have you as his person. By the way, I have a friend who has a blind Border Collie who lives a wonderful, full and varied life. Animals adapt so well to "handicaps" if they are given the chance. Turns out he doesn't mind the basement garage too much. Actually he seems pretty comfy. Barb, it's not so bad down there now. I put a feather mattress, blankets, a rocker, a lamp, etc. down there and have been spending time down there w/ him. There are two windows, so he gets some natural light. Also I'm trying to talk Roger into having a little cat pen built for George. We're having a large pen built in the next couple of weeks, so the babies can get some natural vitamin D! I don't think it'd be too much more expensive for George to have a little pen. (See, Nancy, you're not the only one who's in the process of covering her property w/ cat enclosures!) His cold is drying up quickly. Roger *might* take him outside later. As you can tell, my old man is softening up (as is his pattern;->) Thanks for sending him the "Cave-In" vibes, Randall! Roger has even agreed to split up the vet/immunoregulin visits w/ me which started yesterday. So my plan of action is as follows: I'm going to try the method that Kathy G.'s friend used to get her felv+ cat to revert to negative. (That's immunoregulin for six weeks, Co-Q10, and the thymus med.). Also, I am going to use some herbs, enzymes, and a combo-homeopathic remedy which was written about in Alternative Medicine mag., issue 24. (In this article the author claims she also was able to get her cat to revert to neg.) I'm going to try to get an appt. w/ the holistic vet in Fairfield and see if he'll work w/ me on this, as well as hanging on to my Ottumwa vets (whom I really like)--BTW, Cheri, that's where I am. Have you heard of Ottumwa? It's in southeast Iowa, near Fairfield, the new age mecca of the Midwest. I really lucked out. (I'm serious!) I really want to try this. I'm not trying to give anyone false hope, least of all myself, but I can't pass up these possibilities. Kat, yes I believe Ernie is with me on this. I was meditating in George's room, trying to send him healing thoughts, and I got a vivid image of Ernie strolling toward me. The intuitive/ holistic vet sounds interesting. If I don't like the holistic vet in FF, I might try Dr. Debbie. Also thanks for the encouragement. I have bonded so w/ George that right now it would really hurt to give him up. Of course, I would do what's best for him. Really, in spite of these "plans" I'm playing it by ear. Thank you all for your support. It means so much to me. Susan katseven@pcsia.com PS I will be adding George and Tails to tomorrow's candle service's special needs list. Debby, did you want me to add Hershey? Let me know. Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Hello Friends, Someone on the holisticat list was kind enough to repost some information regarding an accurate FIP diagnosis. I've edited it and the part below raises a big question mark for me. Can someone who is a bit more experienced with the profile numbers kindly help me out? I'm afraid I'm new to all of this. Thank you so much. The citation from Dr. Susan Little indicates that an accurate FIP diagnosis must come from the results of 3 tests, in addition to the clinical symptoms of the disease offered by the cat. > > >The group of tests you are referring to are white blood cell count, > serum > > >total protein and coronavirus antibody titre in a cat with signs of > illness > > >that could be due to FIP (not in a well cat). My cat *is* sick; he does show almost all of the clinical symptoms for FIP (except he does not have the fluid accumulation in the abdomen). His coronovirus antibody titre test was very high (1:3200); his T. Protein was high (8.4); but his White Blood Cell count was mid-range (6.9). Does anyone know which abbreviation is for lymphopenia? Tails' profile states a LYMPH of 3 (mid-to-high range) and a A.LYMPH of 3 (mid- range). In any event, Tails' only abnormal values come from the Chemistry 20, not from the CBC nor Differential. According to Dr. Little, since all 3 abnormalities are not present, there is a 98.8% chance that my cat is not FIP????? Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Debby, Thanks for your message. Of course when I first did the test (with the first vet), she kept saying all along "this is simply for academic reasons...your cat does not have FIP, your cat does not have FIP, etc.). So I didn't pay much attention. Now, after the drum has rolled, I had the vet fax me copies of the tests and so I have the numbers. I asked vets #2 and #3 to tell me which kind of titer test it was, and they were both guessing. Isn't it great to send them to school for years so they can make stuff up? :) Anyway, here's what the titre test says. It was sent to the Florida Department of Agriculture, Kissimmee Laboratory, Kissimmee FL. Specimen: Serum. 07/07/1998 Virology: Serological indirect fluorescent antibody staining for feline infectious peritonitis 1:3200. Feline corona virus IFA IGG titers less than 1:400 are not considered significant in cases suspect for FIP. For titers of 1:400 or greater, case history and and clinical signs must also be considered to establish tentative FIP diagnosis in live animals. So, does that mean it's an IFA test? The older one? Ya know what, I have a good feeling about Hershey. And I think he's going to be just fine. I really do. I have tamed many a feral cat with the help of singing softly and trying to use a song that says their names. You can make a song up if no song to go with their names. For example, I had a Red Tabby mix female who was wild as the wind. I named her Buttercup while taming her. Whenever I did anything with her or for her or was in her hearing vicinity, I would sing...."Sweet little buttercup..... :) Before she left for her new home, she would eat from my hand. At first, I would just sit at the door of their room and softly sing to them using their names if they have them. If not, just sing something you would sing to a baby and put the words kitty or kitten in it. Then after doing this awhile, try singing the same song when you open the door to give them food, etc. Then just follow a cautious agenda always using the song sung softly. I watched a Dateline tonight about a man who lives with the Grizzly Bear in the summer as one of them (he is studying them & trying to save them from becoming extinct). When asked how he is able to get along with the Grizzly and not get eaten, one of the things he uses is singing to the bears. When you sing to an animal, it softens the tone of your voice and is soothing and attractive to animals. Try it why don't you? :) Brenda.... ---------------------------------------- Date sent: Sun, 26 Jul 1998 21:47:55 -0500 From: "Brenda K. Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Randall - First of all, do you know if the test that was given to Tails was this new FIP ELISA test or just the older test that couldn't necessarily differentiate between FIP and any of the other corona viruses? I was told, in reference to my Hershey ( who also just recently tested at 1 :320 using this new ELISA test ) that Hershey's lymphocyete count was 1683 and in a cat with FIP it's supposed to be 1500 or less. And... his globulin count was 4.3 and in a cat with FIP it's supposed to be over 5.8. She thinks this means that it's an 88.8% chance that Hershey will be FINE and not develop FIP. I agree this is all terribly confusing. I think to a large extent we're mixing apples and oranges here if we're looking at the ELISA test + the old standards of the lymphocyte count and the globulins as well. I'm not sure they both go together as part of the "new diagnosis" if you know what I mean . I intend to ask my vet this exact question tomorrow and will let you know what I find out. wish I could be more helpful tonight! I got such good results with the pet-tinnic it was unbelievable. My Howling Kitty dropped from 14 pounds to 8 pounds in three weeks. He was a hefty kitty. I couldn't get him to eat at ALL. After about a week on the pet-tinnic, he was eating almost normally. I don't know if this is an acceptable practice, but I also gave him access to organically grown catnip. This stimulated him even more. It lifted his depression most of the time. If you need some home grown catnip, send me your mailing address. I'll get it to you. Now is the premium time, it's in bloom. I know I was grasping at straws with the catnip but I got very positive results with it. It made my HK want to play and gave us some quality time together. I hope this helps.
