With the introduction of the "gordita" at Taco Bell, I've also adotped that name for her as well. Misha is not picky on names. Whatever I call her, she still responds. Misha eats dry food everyday and gets a can of Fancy Feast once a week ("special nummies"). I don't give her treats anymore. Last week on this show called "Pet Connection" (I think that's what it is-- the show is on the FX cable channel), there was a segment about overweight cats and a vet bought in his fat cat as an example. The kitty's name? Of course it was Misha. No kidding!! To our spanish-speaking friends: Does "gordita" mean "fat little girl"?? Re lanais: Misha and I have lived in three different apartments since we hooked up four years ago. One had a porch, one a deck, and the other a lanai. Since Misha is strictly an indoor kitty, she wasn't allowed on any of them unless I was holding her. :) -chere (and Misha, the gordita) ---------------------------------------- Date sent: Sat, 25 Jul 1998 22:01:06 -0500 (CDT) From: "Nancy A. I love my AC also--I have no idea where my cats get their love for heat--certainly not me! (oh oh, Barb might backhand me for that one ) A lanai is like a patio, usually screened-in. I would say most of the Florida homes have them. They're sort of a "must", right up there with a swimming pool (which I don't have, sadly). Randall ---------------------------------------- From: chere@nwnexus.com (Cheryl A. In some places where there are an assortment of floor plans, the smaller or "junior" units have lanais. -chere (a former night manager--and yes, Misha helped) ---------------------------------------- From: chere@nwnexus.com (Cheryl A. I live in northwest Arkansas where we've been toting near 100 degree weather for 2 months with heat indices of 105--110. We live in a trailer but have air conditioning. All the kitties except one would rather be outside in our fenced yard (and Jake in his enclosure). Most don't seem to like the coolness even though our thermostat is about at 77 or 78. From what I understand, cats just really like warm weather or at least put up with it. I make sure they have cool water--lots of it--at all times. She is a tortie and fat as a little bowling ball. And only on dry food! She doesn't like the canned like the others. She was a shed dweller that I brought in when winter set in. I would see her come out of the shed and hop thru the snow to get to the side porch where I feed every cat in the neighborhood I think. Finally, I could stand it no more and in she came. She came in a took over the dry food bowl. She was so skinny then, now such a pudgy thing. barb ---------------------------------------- From: Newtanator@aol.com Date sent: Sat, 25 Jul 1998 21:16:05 EDT To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: ringo Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net No, no. a lanai is not a porch, maybe they are more like patios. We have porches here in Michigan to, or decks. but no one EVER calls it a Lanai. How about it Florida people. barb ---------------------------------------- From: viper102@uswest.net Date sent: Sat, 25 Jul 1998 12:50:53 -0700 To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: ringo Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net I was watching the Animal planet channel on tv and they said that cats like a little heat. Our cat just sits on a desk ans sleeps during the day. ---------------------------------------- From: EchoSynch@aol.com Date sent: Sat, 25 Jul 1998 19:42:31 EDT To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: ringo Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Barb, Well I know that Florida also has lanais, which is funny since we called them porches back in Missouri :) Don't miss the snow at all! So I don't think an AC unit would fit there. We have very little humidity here in Washington and as the weather goes, the really hot days don't last for long but I think we've all been spoiled by the temperate weather and that's why the hot days seem so unberable!! Ok, go ahead and call us weather wimps!! I loved the one on "golden girls". Sure wish I had one, but it prob wouldn't be feasable when your hip deep in snow! barb ---------------------------------------- From: chere@nwnexus.com (Cheryl A. I am one of those folks who has a computer that does not read graphics and it is a waste of my computer time and bandwith. I'm sure many of the subccribers to this group would enjoy seeing pictures of Ringo and I'm sure I would too if I had the capability to enjoy it. But please remember that all of our computer systems are different and with the amount of traffic on this group already, it takes up a lot of time just to get through the messages. As for the sneezing sound, my Misha makes that once in awhile, but I think it is an actual sneeze. We live in a wooded area and there's a lot of pollen flying abound. I try to keep my windows open only at night (especially now since the hot weather as finally arrived in the Puget Sound area!!). Here's a question for those of you in the "hot wather" areas of the country: How are you managing to keep your kitties comfy during the high heat?? We don't have air conditioning. As I said, I keep my windows and blinds open at night and close them in the morning. I also have a ceiling fan. Is there anything else I should be doing? Thanks!! We have air conditioning here (thank goodness...here in Florida, it was over 100 today) but the kittens (all 4 of em) are almost always outside on the lanai where there's no a/c. We built a little kitten door so they could go in and out to the lanai at their leisure :) Randall echosynch@aol.com ---------------------------------------- From: Newtanator@aol.com Date sent: Sat, 25 Jul 1998 17:48:34 EDT To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: ringo Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Nancy, I must have fat, lazy cats. They sometimes lay right in front of the AC with it blowing their fur! And we haven't been as hot here in Michigan as you have. I guess they do take on the traits of their owners. I LOVE my AC. barb ---------------------------------------- From: Newtanator@aol.com Date sent: Sat, 25 Jul 1998 14:56:26 EDT To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: ringo Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Chere, Wish I could help, but I would die without air conditioning. I think the cat's would to they have gotten so used to it. spoiled, like me. If you can afford a small window unit, that might be enough to keep it cool when it gets really hot. barb ---------------------------------------- Date sent: Sat, 25 Jul 1998 15:25:59 +0100 From: "Sonja Lnders" To: Felvtalk Subject: SPEED Test for FeLV and FIV Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net is what my vet is using here, does anyone know if this is the one with so many false positives and negatives? It is an Eliza test and supposed to be reliable (he has been putting a number of cats down on its results). Not my Schurli, though! This test has not been out very long, 2 years or so. I would never put a cat down based on it, that's for sure. barb ---------------------------------------- From: Newtanator@aol.com Date sent: Sat, 25 Jul 1998 17:27:42 EDT To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: SPEED Test for FeLV and FIV Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Sonja, Never heard of one called SPEED. Maybe that is just a brand name or something. The only ones I have heard of are: ELISA, ELISA specific for FIP, IFA and PCR which I just heard of that is even more specific for FeLV. barb ---------------------------------------- END
