I've never had to calm down ferals, but here's what I'd try: measure out a specific amount of water and add 4 drops of Rescue Remedy to the water (maybe 1 cup to start?). From there you'll just have to monitor their behavior and adjust the ratio accordingly. If they need to have more Rescue Remedy in their water I'd reduce the amount of water rather than increase the RR--that way you won't be throwing out all the RR when they need fresh water. Keep us posted on the results!! Great news! I can tell you that the Ambrotose is the most likely cause of the bad breath. When the Ambrotose is being used by the immune system the immune system starts killing off stuff really fast. All the dead debris has to somewhere--and sometimes there's too much *junk* to exit through the normal routes. Bad breath, bad gas (Sarah, I've been meaning to tell you that Bob's gas will disappear eventually), smelly coat and smelly ears can all be evidence of detox, and will lessen as all the systems are cleaned up. Howling Kitty's confusion may be due to detox also, and possibly to dehydration, but this too should clear up in time. If Howling Kitty were my cat I'd make sure that everything that went in his mouth had Ambrotose in it---water, wet food, dry food. I know how happy you're feeling right now--I've been "to the brink" with 2 of my positives (before Ambrotose), and it's really scary. Keep up the good work you two! My husband and I have been able to tame several ferals using this techinique. Any vet who is not prepared to fight the good fight - as long as both you and your fur baby are keen to continue fighting - isn't worth a moment of your time, never mind your money! I agree sugar/water can definitely save lives. The following recipe has helped me to save MANY MANY little lives as it helps to prevent dehydration which of course is a major killer with sick kitties. 1 cup water, 1 heaped teaspoon Glucose (in powder form), half a teaspoon salt Another thing you might like to try is my kitten feeding formula, used for tiny babies with no moms : 1 small can Carnation milk, equal quantity water, 1 egg yolk (it is important not to include any of the egg white), 1 teaspoon Glucose, a few drops Vidaylin or other vitamin syrup I have reared kittens from a few days old until weaning on this mixture and most cats find it palatable. Hang in there, be strong and may the (kitty) force be with you MANDY KITTEN ACTION ---------------------------------------- From: WORKPARK@aol.com Date sent: Mon, 20 Jul 1998 03:33:21 EDT To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Howling Kitty Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Arlene, I'm sorry I haven't posted before now, but I didn't go on-line yesterday (Saturday) and have just seen the posts. Is it possible that there is a problem with Howling Kitty's teeth? That would explain quite a bit - the drooling, bad breath and lack of appetite - he may have been in pain. It would also explain why when he was given th sugar water that his energy popped up. Also, this is just my opinion, but it sounds like you need to find another vet if all they can say is it's time to put him down. my vets didn't give up on me or Rissa-Tai, and she is still here with me. I have read this and was wondering if you have read the same. barb ---------------------------------------- From: Newtanator@aol.com Date sent: Mon, 20 Jul 1998 10:11:22 EDT To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Benito Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net I have had coccidia in Merlin and some other kittens I had brought in. One tell tale thing about the stools. They are very foul smelling, I mean really bad! barb ---------------------------------------- From: Newtanator@aol.com Date sent: Mon, 20 Jul 1998 10:13:03 EDT To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: DMG & thanks Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Randell, I'm one of the old timers on the list, but have been out of town. This seems to help. But whether you would get a cat to eat that, I don't know. I would think there is something lacking in the diet somewhere. You might try adding some vitamins. barb ---------------------------------------- From: Newtanator@aol.com Date sent: Mon, 20 Jul 1998 10:17:51 EDT To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Howling Kitty Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Arlene, I was out of town and so relieved to finally catch up on the mail and see that Howling Kitty is still with us. hang in there. barb ---------------------------------------- From: Newtanator@aol.com Date sent: Mon, 20 Jul 1998 10:22:27 EDT To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Completely off topic ..... Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Mandy, When I brought Jack in, he spent the first two weeks tearing my curtains down and trying to get out. He even did get out once! He pulled the top part of the window down and pushed out the screen. But I trapped him again, and this time made sure the windows were locked. Then, it just stopped. Just like that. BUT, he was not feral, just terrifed because he has had such terrible treatment at the hands of humans. Now that he knows I don't hurt him, he seems very happy. Maybe just sitting in the bathroom on the floor. Just let them see you, smell you. You've got your hands full tho. barb ---------------------------------------- From: EchoSynch@aol.com Date sent: Mon, 20 Jul 1998 10:40:45 EDT To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Howling Kitty Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Arlene, Yes! When Kettainya would get run down, I would give her dropperfuls of gatorade as suggested by a friend who had his zoo kepers license. He said that many animals were given this to keep them from dehydrating on trips. He told me to mix it kind of thick and to give her dropperfuls everytime the thought crossed my mind. I doubt this is good for an extended period of time, but it seemed to help Kettainya from becoming too weak when she first started to have bouts with this disease. We are thinking of you and Howling Kitty! Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Mandy, For taming ferals, If you can put them in a kitty cage or dog crate and keep it up on a table so that they are at eye level, they will tame down faster. This way you can walk in and out of the room, talking to them all the time and not risk yourself getting clawed to pieces. After a few days of eye-level contact and feedings, you can begin stroking them. They should come around soon after that. The rescue remedy will help this process too. You might also try the Rock Rose Flower Essence for fear. A nice site I've found to order through with the descriptions of the various essences is: http://www.morrills.com/ellon1.htm Good Luck, Kat (New Jersey) ---------------------------------------- From: "Moermond, Barbara" To: "'felvtalk@mailinglist.net'" Subject: Howling Kitty Date sent: Mon, 20 Jul 1998 09:56:19 -0500 Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Arlene, I know about the kitties not liking the trip, but if you have some Bach's Rescue Remedy, I bet that will help Howling Kitty deal with the trip better.
