I know that when I first took Rissa-Tai in for it I was picturing her strapped to this big human-size IV bag, waiting for the entire bag to drain in to her. It's nothing like that. What they mean by IV injection is an injection done intravenously into one of their paws (makes sense, but with this disease, it's easy for the imagination to fo all over the place), and it's not that much. Yes, they have to hold still, but where I was expecting a 20 minute (or whatever) ordeal, ita actually takes about 30 seconds. Not too bad. And the Bach's rescue remedy would probably help out too. You can access it by going to Jim's site, "Newer Methods for Treating FeLV+ Cats" at http://www.angelfire.com/il/felv/ You can access most everything we can get through there - it is specific to Feline Leukemia however, and doesn't cover FIP or FIV. Some of the symptoms are similar, but the diseases are different. Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net What's even worse about this - she was not in the car! I had the carrier sitting next to me while I was standing outside. I knew from living here how quickly a car's temperature can elevate, that's why the situation was even worse for me - I didn't think a few minutes outside in the sun would hurt her - but it almost did. That's why I felt it was so necessary to post a warning - it wasn't as obvious that it could potentially cause a huge problem for the cat. I'm having my meowmy type this for me because I can't read or spell and even if I could, her fingers are smaller than my paws, or there would be a lot more typos. I'd like to thank Naomi, Mandy, Gina, Susan, Nancy, Kathy G, Lynn, anyone and everyone who I've missed, and all your furbabies for your well- wishes. I am doing just fine, and my parents have been giving me some ice cream to help me deal with the 110 degree heat we've been having. (This plug is for all my furry friends out there - see, I'm trying for ya!) I feel honored to be everyone's inspiration, but my parents would not have had the strength to see me through this so far if it hadn't been for all of you. Purrs and headbutts to everyone, Rissa-Tai (and for those of you who don't know, I'm a she, and a Siamese mix, and I had my third Birthday this past month. Thanks once again for giving my parents the energy to keep up with me! And one of these days, meowmy will get my picture scanned so you can see how precious I really am!) ---------------------------------------- Date sent: Tue, 30 Jun 1998 12:51:09 +0100 To: felvtalk@MailingList.net From: BILL BEAMISH Subject: Re: Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Dear Charlie, I'm very sorry about Nikita. I know the feeling of being drained, physically and emotionally. Get some well deserved rest now and please remember you did your best for him. You know this disease and you know how relentless it is. You are in my thoughts. Take care of yourself. If you have such good luck getting it to rain up there, I think you're badly needed down here. "They" say most of the fires are contained, but this morning the smoke is really bad again - even in the house. Got the a/c going full blast hoping it will take some of it out. Thanks again to all of you for your concern for us down here. VP Gore was here yesterday and the governor and senators so maybe there will be more action now. When Gore stepped off the plane in Daytona, you could hardly see him come down the steps - that's got to have made an impression. Also wanted to mention all the great news that's been on the list in the last few days! What an inspiration to us all to keep on pluggin'. And thanks again to our Jim! In the meanwhile... last night I gave Hershey his first "dose" of Echinachea in the form of 1/2 capsule sprinkled on his food ( and what a good boy he was -he ate it all.) now.. perhaps this is HOW it's supposed to work .. and I'm NOT exaggerating.. but honestly. within 1 hr. all his sneezing appeared to stop! I didn't even give him an antihistamine last night. I've been with him all morning and still no sneezing! Could Echinachea work THIS quickly??????? I'm really pretty stunned!!! I will mention all these kitties when I perform the ceremony in my home (every Monday night 10 pm EST). I will also provide a complete list for anyone else who would like to do the same. If you keep this week's ceremony list and just add to it weekly, you'll have one too. I will keep all the special needs kitties (candle #2) on the list unless I hear otherwise. I will be happy to add anyone's kitty to either list, but you need to make the request. Every now and then will not hurt her, but I myself would not make it a habit. I still fight with my 14 month old kittens but They will learn. As far as wet food, you can give her a little, I noticed that the kitten wet food put out by Friskies gave my last 2 kittens diarhea, but the first 2 ate that as kittens with no diarhea. My cats eat a minimal amount of wet food. The food with the gravy tends to give them more diarhea than the regular ground food, that is something that you will have to see how it affects her body. When you do a food switch do so slowly so that she does get gastric problems. I am not familiar with vets in MI. I myself am from RI, I would first have her retestd a few weeks from now to be sure that she is indeed positve then I would ask the animal hospital if they do treat FeLv, some vets only answer is euthanasia. The first vet we had was not willing to treat our Rubin when he got ill and was ready to put him to sleep. It just so happened that he got really sick on Easter Sunday at midnight in 1993 and we found a vet that did emergency calls at that time. She was the vet that gave us other options to treat Rubin, we put him thru chemotherpy and we got nearl.y 5 more years out of him. He passed away at the age of 12 on Memorial Day. So if she is positive start calling around and find out who treats FeLv and have her seen by that vet. Well I hope I been helpful Good Luck Gina ---------------------------------------- Date sent: Tue, 30 Jun 1998 12:31:45 -0400 (EDT) From: Charles Klaus To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Nikita Hi To All Just to let every one know that Nikita passed away about 6:00 pm this evening. (Sun Jun 29) I thought he would go last night but he hung on for a while longer. He just grew weaker and weaker - The older I get the harder these things get for me - I have been so preoccupied by Nikitas plight for the last 3 weeks amd am pretty drained at this point. I would also like to thank all those who responded to my posts concerning Nikita they were very helpful I buried him in the garden in the back of my house. Ours eat several times an hour as much as they want and they are perfectly fine we jsut keep the dry food bowls filled up. From the amount of energy you described she has she is probaly burning it off. Cats eat many small meals in a day and most cats will only eat what their body requires to eat. And make sure she has plenty of fresh water Gina ---------------------------------------- From: "Moermond, Barbara" To: "'felvtalk@MailingList.net'" Subject: Nikita Date sent: Tue, 30 Jun 1998 11:38:52 -0500 Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Charles, I am so sorry about Nikita's passing. Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Liz I feel the same way as Lynn and Barb Our cats arre much better indoors. Being outddors is how our Rubin and Sophia got sick with FeLv. The cats may fight at first to go bakc outr but they do get used to beeing in and evenutaly prefer to be in out of the cold, heat, or damp weather. We brought in a feral cat 1 year ago, and now she is perfectly fine and living with an elderly couple. gina ---------------------------------------- From: meowmama@bellsouth.net Date sent: Tue, 30 Jun 1998 12:44:18 -0400 To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Nikita!
