There are other people on the list who has more information on the newest treatments than I do. First you need to make sure that the vet you chose is one that is willing to treat FeLv. Where are you from? Maybe someone who lives near you can recomend a good vet. Testing positive is not a death sentence to our little furbabies. Testing postive that young I would have your kitten retested again it is possible that she had a flase postive test. I had a postive cat that lived to be 12 years old, I just lost him on memorial day. I also have another postive that is 4 years old and has never shown any signs of the illness. And I have 3 other cats that are negative. You want to make sure that your kitten eats a good diet, my vet had recomended feeding Iams cat food because it was high in protein. I also mix the Iams with Nutros all natural food. They eat their dry food ad lib. When my positive was a kitten ( she tested postive at 6 months old) She was a little picky about what she ate she would not eat Iams kitten. They seemed to like the Purina Kitten dry food. Then at 1 year old I weaned them to Iams adult. Also the very important thing is to keep your little one confined indoors, 1 so she will not pass the disease to others 2 so she does not catch anything since her immune system is supressed. Her life will be extended tremendously bding an indoor kitty Well Best of luck to you Welcome to the group Gina ---------------------------------------- From: Newtanator@aol.com Date sent: Mon, 29 Jun 1998 18:12:01 EDT To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: lost one Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Liz, First, I'm sure your mom's cat didn't get sick on your watch. These diseases can lurk for years, esp FeLV, before coming to the fore. You just had the misfortune of being there when it got really bad. There is nothing you could have done to make the outcome any different than it was. In the long run, maybe it was easier on your Mom, tho harder on you, to have you deal with it instead of her. As to not knowing much about these diseases, none of us did in the beginning. We were all flying blind. It's taken me two years and five kitty deaths to learn what I have and there is still so much to learn. If your cats weren't around your mom's cat, then you have nothing to fear from that. It is not carried on clothing and such. If you keep your cats indoors, and all are healthy, it is probable they will all test fine, but do get the vaccinations. If you don't keep them in, and you have roving coyotes and owls, I'd start keeping them in! They may fuss at first, but I have taken in several strays from outside and it is interesting they have NO interest in returning to the great outdoors. None whatsoever. They are more than happy to stay in where it's warm or AC is on, depending on the season and plenty of food, all the time. It does tear your heart out, to see them go a little at a time, which is why we work so hard trying to find any new method of treatment or testing or nutrition or whatever to help them live longer lives. FIP is the worst and it was that that probably took your mom's cat faster. It is a dreadful disease. Just remember, we can never look back, only forward and do the best we can do. Give your mom our best and sympathies, and to you as well. barb ---------------------------------------- From: Newtanator@aol.com Date sent: Mon, 29 Jun 1998 18:21:19 EDT To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: information Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Sarah, A fellow Michigander! I'm down just south of Monroe, near the Ohio line. It sounds like your little one is a perfectly happy and healthy kitten playing and eating like that. I say that because I also had a kitten that was positive. He was sickly from the day I brought him home. I guess that is what attracted me to him. I tried to tell myself it was always something else, a cold, coccidia, but in fact he had FeLV. So if your little one is acting like a normal kitten be happy. And certainly retest in a few weeks. I was just at the vets today and asked him about testing one so y ---------------------------------------- From: Newtanator@aol.com Date sent: Mon, 29 Jun 1998 18:26:13 EDT To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: information Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Sarah, Sorry that one got send before it was done but my big bottomed Dexster just sat on the mouse and sent it off. Anyway, my vet said 9 wks is the very earliest he would test and would be leary of the results, esp if the kitten appears very healthy. The Iams kitten chow is great food, tho a little expensive, it's worth it. You need to read the information on our angelfire site, esp the stuff on ImmunoRegulin, which is prob the first drug you might want to start with. Even a 9 wks old can get it safely. After you have read the information, come back with any questions you might have. take care, barb ---------------------------------------- From: "James G. I have one question to ask. When I got my kitten My friend also took home one of her sisters. She had her kitten tested before I did because her kitten was apperently showing signs of illness. The tests on her kitten came back very strong and obvious. when i learned that her kitten was positive is when I took my kitten to be tested she tested positive also but the vet didnt say anything about a strong result. he did say that she was a carrier and did not recommend having her put down, explaining that she may test negative next time MAYBE. but he did recommend my friend to have her kitten put down. I dont understand how he could have two different opinions for the same disease. Meaybe because my cat appeared healthier than hers. but if my cat does continue to test positive wont she also go thru the same thing my friends cat is going thru . I really dont understand the way these tests work or how to determine the difference. My friends cat wasnt deathly ill her stomach was just a little larger than normal other than that she seemed normal if any one can explain this to me please let me know Im so confused. sorry so long thanx Sarah ---------------------------------------- From: Newtanator@aol.com Date sent: Mon, 29 Jun 1998 21:32:00 EDT To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: Re: Hi from Durban, South Africa Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Mandy, I have been doing a rain dance it keeps raining on ME in Michigan. You could probably get all the cat magazines in South Africa, but the postage would cost a fortune! They will send a magazine anywhere you want. I want that article myself, but haven't found the magazine yet. I get Cat Fancy, and I Love Cats, but not that one., of course. Here near the great Lakes we don't have partridges, but big, fat sea gulls who's favorite passtime is to dump on our cars. But I do have a pear tree in the front yard! Great news about Titch. Keep us up to date on the good news. We need all we can get. My little Nicholas got his first FeLV shot today. He gained a pound since his visit just 3 wks ago. So different from Merlin, who at his best only hit 6 lbs at 9 months. Little Nick is only 12 wks old! He will be a big boy, esp if he keeps eating the way he is. He's napping now, I think the shot knocked him down a little, but it usually does. Well, that's it, hope your winter is not going as badly as our summer has. Either fires or floods. My mom's cat--a lovely, large gray tiger neuter male, just had to be put to sleep today, as he was so far gone with FeLV and FIP. He got sick on my watch, so to speak, as I was caring for him while she was out of town, so I feel very bad indeed, besides the fact of being so attached to the critter. I never knew much about these horrible diseases, thinking that only very young cats and kittens succumbed to them. Now, I'm really afraid for my four critters, and I know I need to get them tested/vaccinated as soon as possible. They were never in any proximity to Jackson to speak of, but I know now that these diseases are around. We have a tremendous stray animal problem here, both cats and dogs. It is so hard to see a pet suffering with a lingering disease such as this. I am pretty philosophical about the swift death--the owl, the coyote, or the wheels of a car. While we're sad, we come to accept it. But to see the poor cats fade away like they do, just tears your heart out. Wishing you all the very best, lizB ---------------------------------------- Date sent: Mon, 29 Jun 1998 18:09:59 -0400 To: felvtalk@MailingList.net From: three ring circuits Subject: RE: Thanks to Mandy Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net *LOVE Debby's hairball gang - even my > super-computer-sophisticated son (you know how these computer whizzes > can be -so superior!) was impressed!* ******************************************* Mandy- LOL! thanks !! actually my husband created this little drawing for me and I love it too! I'm new to the list but in just one week have felt the support and friendship that I was looking for as I try to make sense out of this whole FIP disaster that fell into my lap this past January. Hershey seems to be doing okay.. he's still sneezing but I've got him on an antihistamine plus I DID start giving him some Echinachea this evening mixed into his canned food. After a LOT of deliberation... I decided to give him the powdered form which I sprinkled into his canned food and he didn't seem to even notice . Phew! I had heard from the breeder that I got my 2 Ragdolls from ( Bunny and Skylar ) and she told me to use 1/2 a capsule -just sprinkled into his food. That she does this routinely if she's got a sick kitty but only for 10 days.... so this is the route I selected today as I SWEAR by everything this wonderful breeder had told me so far . I've got my fingers crossed and I could have SWORN I even saw Hershey cross his own little white mitted paws after he finished eating. :-) Debby, & the HBG (the HairballGang) ---------------------------------------- From: Newtanator@aol.com Date sent: Mon, 29 Jun 1998 22:12:21 EDT To: felvtalk@MailingList.net Subject: FIP test Send reply to: felvtalk@MailingList.net Can anyone tell me it the new FIP test is done in a lab, or in the vets office? And draw our loved ones to the light, As we call to them by name. Imagine spirits taking flight, For a moment our souls entwine. Say not Good Night, but in some Brighter Time Bid them all- Good Morning. WE GATHER TOGETHER TO HONOR AND REMEMBER OUR PETS Tonight, Monday, we join hands, hearts and souls across the land as one large extended family to pray for our sick and dying pets and to pay tribute to our furbabies who have gone ahead to Rainbow Bridge. Someday, we will meet them again, with hugs, tears and kisses, as we walk together, in eternity, to our new home. Until that blessed day, we honor these precious souls and remember them with the warm glow of flickering candles, sending a message of love, light and healing, and the faith to believe in miracles. PRAYER: God, Creator of all living things, we ask that as we light our candles, the healing warmth of love will flow into the brokenhearted who are tending their ailing pets. Give to them Your strength and comfort. We also pray that the soft glow of light will part the clouds of grief and sorrow to surround our furbabies at the Bridge. May excitement REIGN SUPREME as wagging tails and ecstatic purrs feel our gentle touch once again. May they know the gratitude we hold in our hearts for their faithfulness and gift of unconditional love as they are forever remembered. We are temporarily separated for only a short while. The silver cord that connects us through time and space can never be broken. AMEN.
